I like the feel of an industry wherein the next alternative music stars are trying to develop their own sound instead of just revisiting some old genre. Of course the mission of creating something unseen is really difficult; and there is always going to be someone that's going to “achieve it" by crossing two or three different (and maybe really obscure) references. But the idea of people trying something different is already worth being acclaimed, especially if what it is is palpable and not just some random white noise.
Jai Paul is a 21 year old hailing from North West London with the ability of making interesting pop and telling people “not to fuck with him” in the highest notes thanks to his amazing falsetto. He popped up quietly around mid 2010; we emailed him a coupled of times to no response, but 2011 has seen him become hype with just one song - his debut single ‘BTSTU’, which put him in the BBC’s top 10 artists to watch for 2011.
But ain't no overhype here - this song deserves every highlight it gets. Download it below and get ready to fall in love by it.
‘BTSTU’ also just received a weird animation created by Nathanael Piper that matches the strange aura of the music.
