Theophilus London is one helluva cool dude. We had the pleasure to sit down with him for dinner once, and we could tell that he's the kinda cat who you can go to ask advice from, particularly in the realm of lurve. If you're looking for some love help, but don’t have Theo available, you should run to get a copy of Lovers Holiday. We already had a taste of the EP with ‘Flying Overseas’, a really layback jam featuring Dev Hynes and Solange Knowles, but I feel like the game is really on with ‘Why Even Try’.
First of all, the lyrics perfectly the kind of express drunk anger you'll go and post about on Twitter (been there done that) - especially with it's simple yet impacting chorus line of 'If you think you’re special / you’re probably not'. Then there is the production. It could’ve been just another track that sounds like it was made in the 80s, but it had some details made it so refreshing whilst still carrying a really strong nostalgic feeling to it. The jaw dropping moment here though is the combination of Theo's vocals with Tegan and Sara's Sara Quin. It’s touching without being cheesy - harmonic with personality.
This love (or anti-love) EP is going to have its official release tonight via David Letterman with lots of “swimsuits babes”, as Theo promised on twitter. So tune into CBS (or check Youtube/torrents later) and get your copy of Lovers Holiday here.
