Meet the effervescent Jayne Helliwell. You may have know her from such places as the ICA, XL Recordings, Upset The Rhythm, Ray-Ban and Dazed and Confused where her work has been featured. Besides that esteemed alumni, I M // U R has also been honoured with her work, as she designed our flier for our first ever I M // A \\ PARTY and our opening background on this very site you are perusing.
Jayne has been an illustrator for many years already; and she has recently founded Free Trapper - a multi-disciplinary design agency that works with art direction, print, illustration, moving image, magazine design and illustration (Congratulashaylashuns).
I met Jayne whilst we were both working on Amelia's Magazine; she had just finished writing up the notoriously hard to interview Justice phoner and had passed it to me for editing. And in turn, I wrote up an article and she designed the layout for the page (amongst designing many other things for the magazine). We bonded over mutual experience of the Mid-lands of England and the fact that her iTunes library is named "CHEESE IS MEAT" as a constant reminder of her commitment to the cause.
Jayne is all about thinking and doing; dialogues, shapes and colours. In the spirit of mid-century futurism, space saga and vivid expression, her aims are that of an otherworldly caste. She's frantic to lose herself in fantasies that she's always had an impulse to create and explore.
I fell in love with her darkly optimistic, curious and brooding works; full of texture and grit that she smoothes and balances with the gentle nature of her vision. Thanks Jayne for our gorgeous background!
Long Live Free Trapper!
