Beyoncé - 4
We swear this isn't an ironic listening. We love Beyoncé and 4. OK, we might unironically skip straight to track 5, 'Party', produced by Kanye West and with rap by Andre3000, because we ain't no stay-home-mums that need all those ballads about being broken hearted and finding the right person. But, after that, the album turns into a beautiful compilation of classic r'n'b, soul and a bit of sweat-inducing booty tracks - not too many though - that sound surprisingly courageous considering the actual state of pop music. And for that, we bow down and hail Queen B. P.S. Get the deluxe version, for those extra couple of amazing tracks.
Bassike
The name of this label has been interpreted in many ways; from 'bass-seekey' to 'base-ike', but the correct way describes exactly what this label is about: BASIC. Bassike delivers easily breezily cut staples with an interesting little twist that keeps them from being your run of the mill. For those that live in climates like that of Australia (where Bassike hails from) or Brazil, you'll know how easy it is to make fashion faux pas when the weather gets hot and the prospect of wearing anything but a bathing suit becomes slightly unappealing; Bassike is all and everything you need.
Game of Thrones
Before watching HBO's Game of Thrones, I assumed the series would tend a bit more towards the blood-dripping Danish movie Valhalla Rising rather than fairy-tale stories a lá 'Lord of the Rings'; and for that I didn't really like the series at the beginning. But slowly, I found myself submitting to tales of bad kings, midget juggernauts, savage warriors and... dragons. And that happened probably because there aren't exactly good guys and bad guys here, like there are in Tolkien stories - and that is, of course, a simplification of his work. Another reason I relented to this series is because of the intriguing political backstage element that leads to the ever-happening dance of thrones. Oh, and did I mention the gratuitous nekkid-ness?
The Norfolk // Sydney, Australia
Of the slew of new spots having opened up in Sydney in the last six months, The Norfolk on Cleveland St in Surry Hills has been one fated with success. Owned by some of the same kids that have brought The Flinders back to life (and currently, it's incredibly quick onset of 'The Norms'), you'll undoubtedly find The Norfolk rammed with all kinds, vying for a bite, a beer and a spot in the garden out back. The aim of the game is to cultivate Aussie pub culture at it's best; and it's doing a pretty decent job so far - if only you could get a table!
Super Sad True Love Story
Super Sad True Love Story is the third book from the writer of the best selling Absurdistan, Gary Shteyngart. Incidentally, I read him name dropped in Flavorpill's Ultimate Hipster Reading list and in the same sentence as James Franco (they're buds, apaprently) just before I finished his latest offering. Don't let any of that put you off, or take away any of the sad scary brilliance of Super Sad True Love Story; written from the perspective of one 39 year old Lenny Abramov, son of Russian immigrants and in love with the impossibly cute and cruel Eunice Park. A satire that cuts to the bone, Super Sad True Love Story is exactly it's title. And it's good.

MIX // How To Make It In America 2

im-ur-how-to-make-it-in-america-season-2-mix

Season 2 of How To Make It In (New York City) America made a welcome return this month! I missed these guys. Everyone's kind of vaguely annoying in their way, but infinitely lovable despite this; probably because they very much reflect you or someone you know. Especially the duo of single syllable shmucks that headline the situation, Ben and Cam, who not only have you sympathetic to their causes, but rooting for them.

Unlike Eddie Kaye Thomas' interjection after Blood Orange's excellent 'Sutphin Boulevard' on the mix, I don't particularly want to be friends or hang out with any of the lead characters; though I am very happy and entertained watching their pain and their joys, their embarassments as well as their triumphs.

On the other hand, I'm totally crushing on KiD CuDi's Domingo this time round, even though I was less than impressed by his shirtless CK ads from last season. Kudos to KiD redeeming his bad self. Anyway. I've been sitting on this one for a while, it's been a busy time, excuse the lack of posting blah blah blah...

This is another solid mix, a perfect accompaniment to the series as well as your Wednesday, well curated by the bro behind the music of the equally-Wahlberg–produced Entourage, Broke Mogul, who hooked up with Mick Boogie to make this mix. Tracklist below; stream it or go download it after that:

MIX // DFA Radiomix #19 by Joe Goddard

im-ur-joe-goddard

Joe Goddard's 'Gabriel' is a track that needs little push, simply because it's just so goddamn GOOD. But DFA are leaving no stone unturned with Goddard's recent work (featuring that insane vocal from the golden pipes of Valentina); first releasing the four track Gabriel EP and the video for the single, throwing a party at XOYO London in honour of the EP (this Saturday the 24th) and on top of that, the Gabriel Remixes EP was released earlier this week and is now available.

Gabriel by Joe Goddard feat Valentina

If that wasn't a full bodied enough campaign that I ever did see, Joe has whipped up an excellent mix for DFA's 19th Radiomix series in timely fashion. This is perfect for a mid-week pick me up - it'll leave you dancing over hump day. Revel in the track and video by Utile Creative and Jazz Goddard below before checking the tracklist and streaming or downloading the mix after the creepy/cool/creepy face-off I've conveniently placed underneath here...

MIX // SBTRKT for XFM

im-ur-sbtrkt+007

Full of gems, SBTRKT's self-titled album was one of the soundtracks to my Parisian adventures during European summer earlier this year. As it starts to warm up in the Southern Hemisphere, I have no doubt that it will continue to musically enhance the heat, deep into an Australian summer.

Speaking of deep, here's a new mixtape that SBTRKT did for Mary Anne Hobbs' new XFM radio show. Perfect to frame your mind for focussing on work or a dive into the abyss of a darkened dancefloor, this is a scintillating fifteen-track mix. Check it below:

MIX // Blood Orange for Opening Ceremony

im-ur-dev-hynes

The line up of MoMA's Warm Up Fest 2011 was after my own heart with the likes of oOoOO, Gang Gang Dance, SBTRKT, The Juan Maclean, Pictureplane, Tanlines, Nguzunguzu, Teengirl Fantasy, Solange aaaand - the point of this post - Blood Orange gracing the PS1 shindig.

The scenesters from Opening Ceremony were present, did a Q&A with soon to be Aunty Solange (who made an onstage cameo with Dev at the festival) and nabbed a mixtape from the prolific and terrific Blood Orange. It's laid back, easy bunch of tunes to listen for your Tuesday. Check the track list and cop the mix below that.

Pusha T (Feat. Kanye West & Young Jeezy) - Amen
Malcolm Mclaren - Madam Butterfly (Un Bel Di Vendremo)
Blood Orange - Bad Girls
MCL (Microchip League) - New York, New York (Double NY-Mix)

MIX // Twin Shadow's MOMUS
im_ur=twin-shadow-low1
HIYA // George's arm/tatt

Twin Shadow described his break-up mix for Oki-Ni (who, if you didn't know, do a fabulous mixtape series besides fabulous clothes) with, 'I was thinking about blaming everything on girls.' So, yeah this mix is 'melancholy and wounded...tied together by a feeling of bitter-sweet loss'. But at the same time, and perhaps much more apparent (in my ears at least), is the sound of the mild self-derision that can ring heartbroken self pity. It is, after all, named after the Greek God of mockery, Momus; because lurve makes fools of us all baby.

The transitions are a little random on this one, but it gets by. I mean, when you're in the midst of enjoying your own desolation and heartbreak, you can be a little erratic. Even if it's just over the despair of it being another Monday. Stream it below the tracklist:

Tracklist:
1. There’s No Other by The Crystals
2. Andy’s Chest by Lou Reed
3. Only The Lonely by Roy Orbison

MIX // Brenmar for Dummy

im-ur-dummymix_brenmar

Brenmar has steadily been on the rise and rise this past year. And he's upward bound if he keeps dropping bombs like his mix for our friends over at Dummy Mag. Interspersed with official mega hits as well as some lesser known gems, this mix is a no-brainer. Though personally, I still prefer his Gold Bricks Fader Mix; it's a little more challenging and less obvious than this one, as nostalgically amazing as it is.

As he spilled to Dummy, he's dropping a new EP in September on Hum&Buzz with: "...3 new original tracks with remixes by DJ Mike Q, Dj Pierre and Scratcha DVA. I’m reallllllly excited for the project! Got a few original vocal collaborations on the way too that should be out sooner than later."

MIX // Yelle's Bonjour Mix

im_ur_yelle_bonjour_mix

An appropriate mix to get back to blog with, since I've just returned from Paris last week..!

HELLOYYYY/bonjour/olá/hej/yo! We really have missed you all. We've been working on a bunch of other stuff, so we've let the posts lag. OUR BAD.

Anyway, here we go, trying to get back into your good books by saying hello to this week with a mix from our favourite French fille, Yelle. Her right hand man, Grand Marnier collaborated with fellow Frenchman, Julien Tiné to deliver this 'Bonjour Mix'.

It's a mix to get your head focussed and geared up for the week, no easy little slide into Monday with this one. Some of the tracks are a little ravier than expected; a little more hard hitting and tough than the usual Yelle fare - but it bangs, and I dig. Check the tracklist below and grab the mix itself below that!

1. Yelle - Que Veux Yu (Logo remix)
2. Ost & Kjex- Dirty Mind
3. James Curd feat Devin Byrnes - Open Up Your Mind
4. Jaymo & Andy George - Pocket Song
5. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs - Housegold Goods (Justin Martin instrumental remix)
6. Drop the Lime - Hot As Hell (Canblaster remix)
7. Siriusmo - Signal
8. Congorock - Babylon (Riton remix)
9. Siriusmo - Programchild
10. Les Edits du Golem - Chico
11. Adele - Rolling in the Deep (Jamie XX Shuffle)

Eazy E - No More ?’s
SOS Band - The Finest
