BEFORE TODAY by Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti
It doesn’t take much to make me feel stupid. Trying to find the words to describe the debut album of Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti at 4AD is just one of many examples I could give you. To me, ‘Before Today’ sounds like an album that Kevin Barnes could be recording if he loved goth bands more than funk ones. Or like the cold wave genre entering a multicoloured psychedelic stage instead of glazing at it's own depression. Don’t mind my threadbare examples; this is the album that will make it onto every interesting top 10 of the year and you don’t wanna miss it.
Nathan Smith
I can't resist (probably overpriced) basics-with-a-twist. My wardrobe, full of T by Wang, Oak, Bassike and yes, American Apparel is proof of this; and since in Australia, a new favourite has emerged in the form of Nathan Smith. His selection of supersoft tees, tanks and dresses have sucked me into buying multiples of a number of styles in different colourways. You just can't go wrong with these though! Addictively and endlessly wearable - and not in actual fact, overpriced in the slightlest - Nathan Smith is the way forward for your wardrobe.
Freaks and Geeks
I don’t think any series will treat teenagers the same way that Freaks and Geeks did almost 10 years ago. Although relying on every teen American cliché they could, this series was the closest thing to reality you could get whilst still being something fun and interesting to watch – cause, you know, life is boring. With bands like The Who, The Clash and XTC being either part of episodes or the soundtrack, this 80’s based cult show was short-lived (only 18 episodes), but long enough to enrich the careers of some young actors (i.e. James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Busy Philipps and, erm, Linda Cardellini) and is greatly missed. Can we have a movie about them meeting again in the 00’s?
Rong He
Once, a friend of mine wanted to take me to this 'cheap Chinese restaurant', situated in the heart of Liberdade, a Japanese neighborhood in São Paulo. When we got there the place was packed, but because it looked cheesy and kinda poor, I didn't want to wait it out. It took another friend for me to go back there and fall in love with it. Now, every time the mood for some freshly made noodles (you can watch the chief making the noodle dough through a window) framed in some horribly painted pink walls takes me, I go for Rong He. Did I mention the food is also incredibly generous and cheap?
The Selby Is In Your Place
The ultimate in peeping tom into other, cooler, more fashionable, richer, quirkier and more-hipster-than-thou lives is Todd Selby's The Selby. Having previously been an internet only voyeur's dream, Todd has just last month released The Selby Is In Your Place, a coffee table tome full of twee drawings, colourful interiors and people showering. Half of the images in the books are favourites from the website and the other is stuff he hasn't published online yet. So go check it out, maybe buy it if you can to make your crappy coffee table in your crappy apartment that little bit cooler with pictures of someone else's cool stuff.

Metronomy in CTRL

Topman: Joe Mount aka Metronomy, in CTRL

As Raphael was on his way out to DJ (Feliz aniversario Michell e Fubah!) at a birthday party, I slunk in from Topman’s opening CTRL night curated by METRONOMY. It was a rather well turned out crowd, dressed in a way that those big guns at Topshop/Man would be proud; it was an event that they could marvel at their cleverly executed marketing strategies to see the very neatly eclectic and nattily groomed lads and lasses who filled the gig room at the Hoxton Bar & Grill. (I, in fact, was also incidentally in Topshop; sporting a black panelled body con skirt that I’ve taken to wearing at every opportunity with anything and everything in my wardrobe, and that night it was coupled with amongst other things, my favourite asymmetric Ann Sofie Back cardigan).

Anyway, the gig room was absolutely rammed. So, taking a deep breath and squaring my shoulders to forge through the crowd, I ended up meekly apologising to all the people whose drinks I accidentally knocked as I squeezed past them, ducking my head and weaving like Beyoncé. Even having mad weaving skillz such as I, it was still a struggle to get in and out of the obviously fashionable event.

Your Twenties (+ Metronomy on drums)

By the time I arrived and found a little space where I could comfortably obscure someone else’s view of the stage (unfortunately I was standing in front of a short girl - okay, I was wearing my beloved four inch platform Opening Ceremony wedge boots; I was probably actually her height to begin with), I had unfortunately missed Koko Van Napoo but skidded in time to catch Your Twenties. Who were accompanied by, to my surprise, Joseph Mount (curator of the night) of Metronomy fame on the drum kit - I didn’t realise that he had joined Your Twenties to drum to Gabriel Stebbing’s (keyboards/bass in Metronomy) vocals and guitar. Apparently not though as Gabe explained; Joe had kindly stepped in as their usual drummer had traded this gig to go to America with a band that was breaking up anyway (burrrn!). Your Twenties glided through their tightly harmonised set, charmingly nostalgic yet gently modern in their Metronomy tinged take on Beatles flavoured indie pop. Kamerakino then stepped up with their brand of jangly, quaintly noir gypsy throw down.

I exited after that as I had a cameo to make at the bar I regularly haunt. It was their first karaoke night and I promised I would stop by. It was brief but intense, and as I was walking away one of the owners came running out after me yelling “Christel you’re on! They’ve got Britney! Quick!” WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY (but I did it of course. And it was beyond fun).

We Have Band vs Solange: To twitter or not to twitter?

darren-we_have_band
OMG! It's Solange!

My favourite iced lollies in the world are Soleros. I always get a flash of a Solero when someone says Solange...But I digress; anyway YES! WE HAVE BAND's music is a million times better than Soler-ange of the House of Dere-ange (I still heart you Beyoncé), as someone commented on Darren's (who looks after Vocals/Drums/Percussion/Sampler in We Have Band) Facebook status earlier today.

WE HAVE BAND have been making waves in the UK and certainly their jam-packed international gig schedule (and how immensely difficult they are to actually pin down for more than fifteen minutes in one city) is some kind of indication that this trio from London are going places. Literally.

The mass musical exodus that occurs in London around this time of the year when all the wanna-bes and gonna-bes head over to the States to do the big Spring pow-wows and the festival circuit is a funny time. A good time for most, a bitter time for others. We Have Band I think, would be having a very good time.

They did SXSW. Apparently, so did Solange - in the observation fashion anyway. And Solange did We Have Band. Well, according to her twitter anyway.

solange-we_have_band
Solange in the We Have Band houuuuuse

Now the biggest question is, as posed by We Have Band on their myspace:

"We have to confess that we're beginning to feel the pressure to twitter. We couldn't really be bothered before but maybe we will.

Should we?"

Twit that shit!
Don't do it!!

And a quick community service annoucement: Even if WE HAVE BAND doesn't twitter, WE HAVE TWITTER (clickety click)!

WE // R \\ DJing tonight at Funhell (SP/Brazil)

The crazy invitation that Michell Zappa did for his bday

I'm going to DJ tonight at Funhell - a weekly, cozily intimate party that happens at Funhouse (SP/Brazil). Tonight, Boss in Drama is going to play live to celebrate the birthday of one of the owners of the party: Fubah (Funhell 's producer) and Michell Zappa (the owner of the wicked Radiohead pics in our webby. He's agreed to be our official photographer at IM // A \\PARTY #2).

So in order to celebrate, I'm posting 5 tracks that I'm most definitely gonna drop tonight, so if you like them you better show up!

A love letter to Aeroplane

The loved one

Dear Aeroplane (aka Vito De Luca and Stephen Fasano),

You already had my heart when you did that incredible remix for Friendly Fires featuring the lovely ladies of Au Revoir Simone - not to mention the Shortwave Set, Sebastien Tellier and Grace Jones remixes that I also adore. From there I went looking for your very own material and I finally understood what Balearic truly meant...yet now you go one step beyond.

In regards to the Disco Balearica mix that came out with the latest edition of the English magazine Mixmag, I'm speechless to say anything except that you, Aeroplane, have just become my favorite producers. Sorry for not going to see you when you played in Brazil, but I just wasn't that into you then. Please come back soon!

Truly yours.

Oh you sexy thing!

terry-richardson-vogue-homme-international-6

If Hedi Slimane is my favorite rock'n'roll art photographer, Terry Richardson is my favorite mistress (I know, I'm a cliché). With super sensual shots in all different contexts he is one of the few who still manage to be himself while working for others. So Terry just did an editorial for Vogue Homme International entitled Autoportraits which shows him playing with this sexy blonde bomb wearing the coolest gold watches in town.

I adore the naughty moments therein, but I adore even more when Terry and the model combine their bodies into one sexy thing.

Blake, Terry and Leighton

Talking about sexy and Terry, he also did a photospread with the Gossip Girl cast for the American edition of Rolling Stone. So you get to see Blake Lively and Leighton Meester sharing an ice cream, some candies and the bed with all the other GG stars supposedly half naked (there's also a pillow fight but meh...).

"They didn't tell us anything about the concept," Blake Lively says. "We didn't know we'd have any props, but we saw this big fun table - like a kid's birthday party. Um, some of it was a little mature for a kid's birthday party. Some of the ... inflatable items...But it's all been a surprise; it's been really fun."

"He had some hot dogs. I'm worried what's gonna happen with the hot dogs," Badgley said upon arriving at the shoot. "I was thinking the exact same thing!" added Taylor Momsen. "When I saw all the props, I wasn't sure what he was going for, but I'm sure it'll be fun," Ed Westwick completed.
