Beyoncé - 4
We swear this isn't an ironic listening. We love Beyoncé and 4. OK, we might unironically skip straight to track 5, 'Party', produced by Kanye West and with rap by Andre3000, because we ain't no stay-home-mums that need all those ballads about being broken hearted and finding the right person. But, after that, the album turns into a beautiful compilation of classic r'n'b, soul and a bit of sweat-inducing booty tracks - not too many though - that sound surprisingly courageous considering the actual state of pop music. And for that, we bow down and hail Queen B. P.S. Get the deluxe version, for those extra couple of amazing tracks.
Bassike
The name of this label has been interpreted in many ways; from 'bass-seekey' to 'base-ike', but the correct way describes exactly what this label is about: BASIC. Bassike delivers easily breezily cut staples with an interesting little twist that keeps them from being your run of the mill. For those that live in climates like that of Australia (where Bassike hails from) or Brazil, you'll know how easy it is to make fashion faux pas when the weather gets hot and the prospect of wearing anything but a bathing suit becomes slightly unappealing; Bassike is all and everything you need.
Game of Thrones
Before watching HBO's Game of Thrones, I assumed the series would tend a bit more towards the blood-dripping Danish movie Valhalla Rising rather than fairy-tale stories a lá 'Lord of the Rings'; and for that I didn't really like the series at the beginning. But slowly, I found myself submitting to tales of bad kings, midget juggernauts, savage warriors and... dragons. And that happened probably because there aren't exactly good guys and bad guys here, like there are in Tolkien stories - and that is, of course, a simplification of his work. Another reason I relented to this series is because of the intriguing political backstage element that leads to the ever-happening dance of thrones. Oh, and did I mention the gratuitous nekkid-ness?
The Norfolk // Sydney, Australia
Of the slew of new spots having opened up in Sydney in the last six months, The Norfolk on Cleveland St in Surry Hills has been one fated with success. Owned by some of the same kids that have brought The Flinders back to life (and currently, it's incredibly quick onset of 'The Norms'), you'll undoubtedly find The Norfolk rammed with all kinds, vying for a bite, a beer and a spot in the garden out back. The aim of the game is to cultivate Aussie pub culture at it's best; and it's doing a pretty decent job so far - if only you could get a table!
Super Sad True Love Story
Super Sad True Love Story is the third book from the writer of the best selling Absurdistan, Gary Shteyngart. Incidentally, I read him name dropped in Flavorpill's Ultimate Hipster Reading list and in the same sentence as James Franco (they're buds, apaprently) just before I finished his latest offering. Don't let any of that put you off, or take away any of the sad scary brilliance of Super Sad True Love Story; written from the perspective of one 39 year old Lenny Abramov, son of Russian immigrants and in love with the impossibly cute and cruel Eunice Park. A satire that cuts to the bone, Super Sad True Love Story is exactly it's title. And it's good.

Vice - Crystal Fighters and Pulled Apart By Horses

DO's:

Photography by yours truly

The Village Underground had all manner of hipster kids fiercely posturing and loitering about outside, perhaps some hoping to be snapped by Mark the Cobrasnake who I bumped into at the door. He was exiting as I was entering (an hour later, spotted: Mark the Cobrasnake and friend nestled at a diner a few blocks down in Hoxton) to the throb of Crystal Fighters onstage.

Crystal Fighters

Not realising it was them, I was decidely unimpressed with the song that was playing as I walked into the cavernous exposed brick warehouse space. The song was AWFUL. Thankfully though, it turned out very much to be a blip and I was totally won over by the rest of their set. They reminded me a lot of CSS for some reason; but a more ravey, pounding version of the Brazilian band - perhaps the reason why Lovefoxxxx was DJing later on in the night.

In case you missed it last week, here's the Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs mix of Crystal Fighters 'Xtatic Truth':

I had actually intended to catch Leeds based band Pulled Apart By Horses, as I heard at the last gig they played at The Old Blue Last that front man and guitarist Tommy Hudson (incidentally big bro to Jack Hudson - apparently mad skillz run in the family) had vommed onto the trendy shoes of the Shoreditch crowd. I missed their Vice set unfortunately, but I did manage to nab Tom in between gig-goers congratulating him on the band's set to question him about the incident.

pulled_apart_by_horses
Tommy Hudson from Pulled Apart By Horses

"I'd been stealing people's drinks all night, and I just felt ill onstage. I was looking for somewhere to puke and it just happened to be onto the crowd. They were not impressed."

Oh dear.

"Later on we were walking past the park and a bunch of girls called out to me. I thought 'Oooo! I'm going to get chatted up!'. Then they said 'Come here and lick the vomit off our shoes, you idiot!' "

We then came to the conclusion that perhaps next gig he might up the ante and do a camp little poop onto the audience's shoes. Fashionably speaking though, Tom was sporting what I thought was a mythical t-shirt depicting Tommy DM from Dinosaur Pile-Up that I had been hoping was real and now need to have even more than before.

Anyway, Pulled Apart By Horses have just finished recording their album, so that will be released into the wilds soon enough. Cop 'The Crapsons', the AA side from the PABH single 'I Punched a Lion in the Throat' below and go download the rest of the release for free here.

IM//A\\PARTY apresenta THE GOLDEN FILTER @ CLASH

flyer-goldenfinger

Jelly Pool Party with Dirty Projectors

At the East River Side Jelly Pool Parties

Formerly held at the Mccarren Pool site, the Jelly Pool Parties have this year found themselves on the east side banks of the East River, with this amazing view of Manhattan as a backdrop. Look at those Lion-King-Circle-of-Life type rays of sunshine decorating the skyline like a halo.

Gig goers heading over to the river side

The crowd wandering in spanned about four blocks leading up to the venue, with gig goers heading over not only for the bands, but to rumble in fiercely competitive games of Dodgeball (trrrrust they were fierce, I kept waiting for some unsuspecting bystander to get smacked in the head...my patience was rewarded) basketball and sunbathing.

DODGEBALL

This popular summer Sunday gig series boasts a truly great line-up from mid-July to the end of August, playing host to acts like Pony Tail, Crystal Antlers, Dirty Projectors, Health, The Black Lips, Deerhunter, Max Tundra, Girl Talk and Grizzly Bear to name drop a few. Last weekend saw Crystal Antlers, Magnolia Electric Co and Dirty Projectors take the stage and we rolled in just in time for Dirty Projectors' set.

pool_party_dirty_projectors_3
From behind the stage, it's Dirty Projectors

The sounds of Dave Longstreth and his extended live line-up of Angel Deradoorian, Amber Coffman, Brian Mcomber with bassist Nat Baldwin and vocalist Haley Dekle boomed over the audience; with Dirty Projectors' trademark fidgety guitar and lush vocal orchestrations being met with warm appreciation and cheers.

Sundown and a really big balloon?

It was a great afternoon, with a supremely chilled kind of atmosphere, and for a sunny Sunday afternoon outdoors, everyone was really rather civilised and surprisingly neat (though maybe I'm just used to Londoners going mad for sun and at any opportunity will get absolutely smashed on a Sunday out of doors with any hint of sunshine in the atmosphere. MISS YOU LONDON).

This Sunday the line-up looks like: And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, The Black Lips, Health, Grupo Fantasma.

SEE YOU THERE, BITCHES, I'LL TAKE YOU DOWN ON THE DODGEBALL COURT. While you're warming up for that, here's a live version of Dirty Projectors' melismatic swervings on 'Useful Chamber' for you.

NEWSFLASH: IM//A\\PARTY RETURNS
FLYER-GOLDENFINGER-frente
flier by the lovely Jack Hudson

IM//A\\PARTY has been reborn...

BIGGER, BETTER and MORE RIDONKULOUS than BEFORE!!

After bringing Brazil electro princess YELLE, Aussie synth-pop darlings BAG RAIDERS we're back to bring you the hype of neo-disco, the darlings of NYC:

THE GOLDEN FILTER

And this time we're crashing CLASH CLUB in Sao Paulo!

Having recently dropped 'Favourite Things' on Kitsuné's latest compilation, this elusive duo first took the scene by storm when they released a faceless 'Solid Gold' into the blogosphere. It had everybody talking about them, wondering, "Who the hell are The Golden Filter?"

Brazil! You may have heard them previously playing the catwalks at the most important Fashion Week in South America, SPFW as well as Casa de Criadores (Sao Paulo's new generation fashion event), and of course here on this very blog as well as countless others.

The Golden Filter recently toured the whole of the USA supporting epic dancefloor killers The Presets and have remixed the likes of Empire of The Sun, Little Boots, Peter Bjorn and John and Cut Copy...and now we're bringing them to play exclusively at CLASH this August.

FLYER-GOLDENFINGER-verso

With support from some of the best acts on the Brazilian scene to complete this extravaganza eleganzaaaa, we've got the musical project of Alexandre Herchcovitch's muse Geanine Marques, who with Paulo Bega and Ricardo Athayde make up STOP PLAY MOON.

We got DJ GIL BARBARA. Not only is he one of Brazil's most prestigious and highly respected DJs and member of super popular party posse CREW, but he's also one of the purveryors of music taste, being a founding father of RRAURL, the first indepedent electronic music site in Brazil.

And last but definitely not least, we've enlisted two-man party unit DATABASE to do a special Ugly Edits set for IM//A\\PARTY before they head off on their US tour. Also CREW members, they're one of the biggest electronic names in Brazil, having officially remixed the likes of Metronomy, MixHell, Larry T, Fatboy Slim (the BPA), Lightspeed Champion and Boss In Drama.

FAJAYJAY mobile

Photography by Ellis Scott

How the HELL do you tie dye a whole freakin' car!? Somehow, Fanny and Jessy did it. They did mention this to me a while back that they had this in the works, especially after graduating fashion college, that they were going to totally transform a car into their very own FAJmobile. And I thought, cool, it's going to be like the Batmobile, but with loads of fringing and probably more naked people inside. I was wrong about the fringing, but I'm pretty sure this car will see a load of nudie people in it. Or at the very least, some super hot, incredibly dressed people standing on top of it.

A tie-dyed car. Yes.
Will Ferrell has a Sexy Hot Tan
will_ferrell__1_-1
BURRRRRRRRRN

Li-Lo had her spray tan line, and Will Ferrell is claiming his stake of the sun protection market with a new line of sunscreen. So, actually, the point is that you really shouldn't be tanning, cause it's bad for your health, innit.

If you really must venture out to soak up some glorious sunshine, you have the options of Sun Stroke, Sexy Hot Tan, and Forbidden Fruit to protect yourself with. And in fact, the $12USD that each bottle costs goes towards the charity that Will has been supporting for many years - Cancer for College’s College Willpowered Scholarship Fund; which grants college scholarships to cancer survivors and amputees.

If you're not really down with charity or even health, then at the very least, you gotta be down with Will. The images on the bottles are classic. Check it:
