BEFORE TODAY by Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti
It doesn’t take much to make me feel stupid. Trying to find the words to describe the debut album of Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti at 4AD is just one of many examples I could give you. To me, ‘Before Today’ sounds like an album that Kevin Barnes could be recording if he loved goth bands more than funk ones. Or like the cold wave genre entering a multicoloured psychedelic stage instead of glazing at it's own depression. Don’t mind my threadbare examples; this is the album that will make it onto every interesting top 10 of the year and you don’t wanna miss it.
Nathan Smith
I can't resist (probably overpriced) basics-with-a-twist. My wardrobe, full of T by Wang, Oak, Bassike and yes, American Apparel is proof of this; and since in Australia, a new favourite has emerged in the form of Nathan Smith. His selection of supersoft tees, tanks and dresses have sucked me into buying multiples of a number of styles in different colourways. You just can't go wrong with these though! Addictively and endlessly wearable - and not in actual fact, overpriced in the slightlest - Nathan Smith is the way forward for your wardrobe.
Freaks and Geeks
I don’t think any series will treat teenagers the same way that Freaks and Geeks did almost 10 years ago. Although relying on every teen American cliché they could, this series was the closest thing to reality you could get whilst still being something fun and interesting to watch – cause, you know, life is boring. With bands like The Who, The Clash and XTC being either part of episodes or the soundtrack, this 80’s based cult show was short-lived (only 18 episodes), but long enough to enrich the careers of some young actors (i.e. James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Busy Philipps and, erm, Linda Cardellini) and is greatly missed. Can we have a movie about them meeting again in the 00’s?
Rong He
Once, a friend of mine wanted to take me to this 'cheap Chinese restaurant', situated in the heart of Liberdade, a Japanese neighborhood in São Paulo. When we got there the place was packed, but because it looked cheesy and kinda poor, I didn't want to wait it out. It took another friend for me to go back there and fall in love with it. Now, every time the mood for some freshly made noodles (you can watch the chief making the noodle dough through a window) framed in some horribly painted pink walls takes me, I go for Rong He. Did I mention the food is also incredibly generous and cheap?
The Selby Is In Your Place
The ultimate in peeping tom into other, cooler, more fashionable, richer, quirkier and more-hipster-than-thou lives is Todd Selby's The Selby. Having previously been an internet only voyeur's dream, Todd has just last month released The Selby Is In Your Place, a coffee table tome full of twee drawings, colourful interiors and people showering. Half of the images in the books are favourites from the website and the other is stuff he hasn't published online yet. So go check it out, maybe buy it if you can to make your crappy coffee table in your crappy apartment that little bit cooler with pictures of someone else's cool stuff.

OMG, shoes.

shutup

BURRRN! Tumblr can be so zingy - and so right - sometimes. So it's time for another bout of shoe fever. The ones I've been frothing over lately have been predictably, from Opening Ceremony, the Robert Clergerie and Doc Martens collaborations in particular as well as some fabulousness from the inhouse designed line. Also recurring, is my fever for Finsk.

Let's take a look shall we:

First up is the perfect 'everydayer', called the Western Bootie from Opening Ceremony. The drool comes with the details on this one; the strength of a perfect stacked heel, the tiny sliver of silver capping the heel and on the beautifully rounded toe.

openingceremony-bkheel

I'm generally not the kind of person who purchases the same thing in different colours, even if I love the style of something. I'm just too poor for that shit. But here, the Western Bootie in the taupe suede, moc croc detail and elastic opening is a departure enough from the basic black style above would allow for buying both without the obnoxious repetition whilst still keeping the silhouette of the shoe. I say obnoxious only because I'm jealous of anyone with enough boogie to buy both.

openingceremony-cowbooties

Doc Martens are a longtime love, even though I refused to wear them when I was five going to kindergarten on account of the flat school shoe style being 'too boyish' at the time. How young and stupid I was then. The Darcie 8 eye in the printed pony skin is beyond cool:

These Robert Clergerie platform wedges are ssick, and comes in beautiful cherry red as well as this steel below - I'd have a hard time choosing between them.

And Finsk take that ponyskin bootie that I've been obsessed with for like, two years now, and refresh it with some little details and fresh colours and fabrics. Here's the black suede with dark wood architectural platform wedge heel. Ahhh.

You can go get all these (and like, so much more) at Opening Ceremony. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go lie down and try and sweat this fever out.

ANGER and MISSONI

anger_missoni

I've been fairly inundated with fabulous fashion films of late; and this latest one from Kenneth Anger for Missoni just about tops the list.

anger_missoni_2

By sheer coincidence last week, we had actually just had a mini-marathon of films by Anger, going through some of his back catalogue of works, including (but not limited to; the following were my favourite ones): Lucifer Rising, Scorpio Rising, Invocation of My Demon Brother (which includes a soundtrack by Mick Jagger), Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome and Kustom Kar Kommando.

Anger's work for Missoni features his lush, hedonistic colour palette combined with his propensity for layering moving images on top of moving images, interjected by occult symbolism. Powerful and beautiful (though the models involved do, at some points, manage to remind me that despite Anger, it IS an ad campaign for F/W 2010/11), it shows that Anger has still got it. Watch the vid below before going and watching his body of work, seriously:

VANILOQUENCE // FAJ + Danny Sangra
-1
This is not a test //

Two of our favourites, the magnificent Danny Sangra and fabulous Fanny and Jessy of FAJ have once again joined forces to make a film of the fashionable (and awesome) variety. Directed by Danny, with music from Rowdy Superst*r and threads from FAJ's latest collection entitled Vaniloquence, the film of the same title is a wickedly er, wicked and disturbing stalk through the canals of Clapton (London).

danny_sangra-faj_film

Simultaneously freaky and envy inducing, Danny and his team have created yet another super ssick, slick and achingly hip short film that not only werks another set of Danny's seemingly endless mad skillz but also gives FAJ the perfect setting to show off Vaniloquence (the collection which Lady Gaga was spotted rocking pieces from).

Go check the film HERE ! I love everything about it - it's seriously, dizzingly cool - just like Danny, Fanny and Jessy themselves.

Charlie Le Mindu has well and truly 'arrived' too many times in his ridonkulously young career to list them all. Anyhooz, this is just a quick update to let you all know, just in case you happen to be in London this coming weekend and have some spare dough, Charlie is going to be popping up with a luxury salon at one of London's coolest and cutting edge boutique/gallery concept stores; Machine-A.

Did you note his new barber chair? Black leather and white snake skin. Can't get any more lux or Le Mindu than that really.

Price list is as follows:

Girrrls  - cut and style £100 / style £65
Bwoys  – cut and style £65  / style £40

Give ELLA@MACHINE-A.COM an email to book an appointment...spaces are limited, so crack them piggy banks and scrape them pennies.

Whilst you're doing that, check out this clip by Japan's Ayumi Hamasaki who worked a whole lot of Le Mindu (as well as other amazing things) in this sexy little choon, 'Sexy Little Things':

Our good friends, the super lovely Paula Reboredo and Gil França not only have their own stores (B-Luxo), run their own  website (Freakstyle), throw amazing parties (VAI! and FUI! at which we were honoured to play at over the weekend for the launch of this collection); but they also photograph and style some of the hippest images in town.

And as if that wasn't enough, to add their resume full of mad skillz they just launched their first ever capsule collection for French born and Brazilian spawned fashion mecca, Surface To Air. With the delectable Lovefoxxx fronting the campaign, these three Brazilian power brands combined to create not only a gorgeous set of images (as photographed by Marcelo Gomes) but a coolly thought out collection that will have the hipsters of Sao Paulo in heat.

KTZ Spring Summer 2011 preview
ktz_preview_ss11_4
KTZ preview!

KTZ the diffusion line of cult London store and label Kokon To Zai has released a preview of their upcoming 2011 collection! A little softer and more lyrical than their usual fare; but no less awesome. In fact I find it a somewhat refreshing blip. So far it suggests to me, a day out at the carnival or circus; with little hints and references to clowns. I never thought I'd use this particular word to describe KTZ, but this collection is looking lovely.

Hiya Atalanta Weller

Chosen to exhibit at BFC New Gen exhibition for London Fashion Week's SS/11 for the third time in a row, Atalanta Weller designs footwear for girls who own a brand of kick ass with a glint in the eye that's totally self possessed and effortlessly wicked. And now she has her own website for you all to clap your peepers on her designs, and wonder to yourself whether or not you could werk those babies on your hooves...

RAFW SS 2010 // Phos Phoro

Hiya Spencer

all photographs by yours truly

2007 saw four talented lads (Christopher Esbers, Guy Hastie, Dion Lee and Spencer Webber) graduate from the Sydney Institute of Technology to be chosen to show their student collections. In a cool twist of fate, these same four lads also showed at this year's RAFW collection shows. Christopher Esbers who, after cancelling last year, came back this season to bated breaths and debuted with an incredibly well received showing; and of course Dion Lee who re-re-confirmed everyone's hopes and expectations with a stellar collection. And a third; with a much quieter but no less confident debut was Spencer Webber with his label, Phos Phoro.

Sheer spots and cleverly layered stripes were the winners in this collection, evoking some quaint little European town where I might imagine a modern day Belle (a la Beauty and the Beast) might hail from - albeit a more rich, sophisticated version; much worldly wise even than that 'poor, provincial' Belle of the film.

Quite in love with this sheer pleated spot skirt:

Some rather witty sheer striped culottes layered over striped shorts to create a check.

A lovely rich red moment - despite it looking rather blood-orange below was actually a *true* red - contributed to my longing to add a true red moment to my own sartorial repertoire.
