Beyoncé - 4
We swear this isn't an ironic listening. We love Beyoncé and 4. OK, we might unironically skip straight to track 5, 'Party', produced by Kanye West and with rap by Andre3000, because we ain't no stay-home-mums that need all those ballads about being broken hearted and finding the right person. But, after that, the album turns into a beautiful compilation of classic r'n'b, soul and a bit of sweat-inducing booty tracks - not too many though - that sound surprisingly courageous considering the actual state of pop music. And for that, we bow down and hail Queen B. P.S. Get the deluxe version, for those extra couple of amazing tracks.
The name of this label has been interpreted in many ways; from 'bass-seekey' to 'base-ike', but the correct way describes exactly what this label is about: BASIC. Bassike delivers easily breezily cut staples with an interesting little twist that keeps them from being your run of the mill. For those that live in climates like that of Australia (where Bassike hails from) or Brazil, you'll know how easy it is to make fashion faux pas when the weather gets hot and the prospect of wearing anything but a bathing suit becomes slightly unappealing; Bassike is all and everything you need.
Game of Thrones
Before watching HBO's Game of Thrones, I assumed the series would tend a bit more towards the blood-dripping Danish movie Valhalla Rising rather than fairy-tale stories a lá 'Lord of the Rings'; and for that I didn't really like the series at the beginning. But slowly, I found myself submitting to tales of bad kings, midget juggernauts, savage warriors and... dragons. And that happened probably because there aren't exactly good guys and bad guys here, like there are in Tolkien stories - and that is, of course, a simplification of his work. Another reason I relented to this series is because of the intriguing political backstage element that leads to the ever-happening dance of thrones. Oh, and did I mention the gratuitous nekkid-ness?
The Norfolk // Sydney, Australia
Of the slew of new spots having opened up in Sydney in the last six months, The Norfolk on Cleveland St in Surry Hills has been one fated with success. Owned by some of the same kids that have brought The Flinders back to life (and currently, it's incredibly quick onset of 'The Norms'), you'll undoubtedly find The Norfolk rammed with all kinds, vying for a bite, a beer and a spot in the garden out back. The aim of the game is to cultivate Aussie pub culture at it's best; and it's doing a pretty decent job so far - if only you could get a table!
Super Sad True Love Story
Super Sad True Love Story is the third book from the writer of the best selling Absurdistan, Gary Shteyngart. Incidentally, I read him name dropped in Flavorpill's Ultimate Hipster Reading list and in the same sentence as James Franco (they're buds, apaprently) just before I finished his latest offering. Don't let any of that put you off, or take away any of the sad scary brilliance of Super Sad True Love Story; written from the perspective of one 39 year old Lenny Abramov, son of Russian immigrants and in love with the impossibly cute and cruel Eunice Park. A satire that cuts to the bone, Super Sad True Love Story is exactly it's title. And it's good.

MIX // DFA Radiomix #19 by Joe Goddard

Joe Goddard's 'Gabriel' is a track that needs little push, simply because it's just so goddamn GOOD. But DFA are leaving no stone unturned with Goddard's recent work (featuring that insane vocal from the golden pipes of Valentina); first releasing the four track Gabriel EP and the video for the single, throwing a party at XOYO London in honour of the EP (this Saturday the 24th) and on top of that, the Gabriel Remixes EP was released earlier this week and is now available.

Revel in the track and video by Utile Creative and Jazz Goddard below before checking the tracklist and streaming or downloading the mix after the creepy/cool/creepy face-off I've conveniently placed underneath here...

A New Garden

I LOVE Orlando Higginbottom and his stellar project Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. For a song as good as 'Garden', there should in fact, be more reasons for it to be heard; and a new video is a pretty good one. Being released on October 3rd via Polydor, it's (re-)whetting appetites for TEED's LP release, set to drop in early 2012. EXCITING.

Originally released via Greco-Roman on the All In Two Sixty Dancehalls EP, 'Garden' was probably the first track that really made people sit up and pay attention to the long titled but awesomely talented TEED. So, amen for it getting the release that it deserves, with a remix package including Soul Clap, Hackman, MYNC, Calibre, and Donae’o.

Here's Joe Goddard's effort, giving 'Garden' a 90s electronic drum beat and an unexpected synth treatment that leaves me kinda unsatisfied. It's an interesting take, and we love Joe Goddard up in here, but for me it seemed that this remix could have been applied to any number of tracks, and wasn't specific to the beauties of 'Garden'. Check it:

And here is the new video, complete with Orlando rising from the sand like some kind of crystal horned god with Lulu and the Lampshades' Louisa making another appearance. (Hipster) Gold.

This might just be *the* house song of the year

joe goddard valentina

Annie Mac premiered this solo track by Joe Goddard (of Hot Chip and 2 Bears fame) last Friday. Since then I've been chasing it like crazy and thanks to Pitchfork, I caught up with it. Featuring the London based singer Valentina, who has a really delicate voice and produces heart-softening folk on her own; this song might just be the house hit of the year.

'Gabriel' is built around house beats, violins and a palpitating desperation in the vocals which combine places that are miles away from shitty/predictable house songs like, let's say, Duck Sauce's 'Big Bad Wolf'. If I had to compare it with another contemporary act, I'd say it sounds a bit like Katy B, if the edge of her album wasn't cut in exchange for a better mainstream reception - and for the record, I do believe Miss B has released one of the best of the year.

And to make it even better, the lyrics are as a good as the instrumental. Check our favorite bit below.

“Gabriel you’ve gone too far and you should hang your head in shame / for these wounds I cannot pay, you’ve gone too far /

you broke my heart, you’ve gone too far”

The Gabriel EP is out today via DFA and Greco-Roman (co-owned by Goddard himself). Stream it all now.

By the way, we already have Bat for Lashes' Daniel, and now there's Gabriel... when will a Raphael and a Christel be out?

Kitsch Kisses
Kisses @ O-Nest Japan

I might’ve been a bit too harsh talking about Kisses’ ‘People Can Do The Most Amazing Things’ video and I think it was my own fault, not Kisses. I didn’t get their kitsch humor at the time. But I think I kinda get it now, and this new understanding even makes them more cute.

For their newest single, ‘Kisses’, Jesse Kivel and Zinzi Edmundson dress as astronauts and go to a cheap-looking moon. There, they explore, get hungry and fire up some sausages. They go exploring again, find an exotic E.T., introduce him to the wonderful world of marshmallows and in return, he takes them on a psychedelic space trip that ends up in a swimming pool on Earth. How awesome is that? Well, not as awesome of the song, but still…

Kisses - Kisses

By the way, the band is offering the song for free. So if you want to grab one of the most chilled songs of the year, just do it below. Joe Goddard (Hot Chip) also did a remix for the song and it’s also a free download (see not only cute, but also very nice), so if you are for a minimal and extended version of the song, you know what to do.

DELS, the Shapeshifter

It's been quite some time since we've heard anything from London rapper DELS aka Kieren Dickens; but here he pops up with a thumping hip hop choon (with a real drum track, love that) produced by Hot Chip's Joe Goddard called 'Shapeshift'.

Cute jumper, Joe, hiya Kieren

It's a wicked video that's a kind of super evolved, high budget, hip hopping version of one of those carnival games where you have like animals all lined up and you have to shoot them off to win a prize. Kind of. Well, that's what it made me think of at least. It's really good, okay?

I feel like DELS has a similar kind of flow and timbre to his voice as Jay-Z but with a British accent. Pretty good then, innit.

Here's a behind the scenes vid of Joe Goddard interviewing DELS about the track and video too:
