Beyoncé - 4
We swear this isn't an ironic listening. We love Beyoncé and 4. OK, we might unironically skip straight to track 5, 'Party', produced by Kanye West and with rap by Andre3000, because we ain't no stay-home-mums that need all those ballads about being broken hearted and finding the right person. But, after that, the album turns into a beautiful compilation of classic r'n'b, soul and a bit of sweat-inducing booty tracks - not too many though - that sound surprisingly courageous considering the actual state of pop music. And for that, we bow down and hail Queen B. P.S. Get the deluxe version, for those extra couple of amazing tracks.
The name of this label has been interpreted in many ways; from 'bass-seekey' to 'base-ike', but the correct way describes exactly what this label is about: BASIC. Bassike delivers easily breezily cut staples with an interesting little twist that keeps them from being your run of the mill. For those that live in climates like that of Australia (where Bassike hails from) or Brazil, you'll know how easy it is to make fashion faux pas when the weather gets hot and the prospect of wearing anything but a bathing suit becomes slightly unappealing; Bassike is all and everything you need.
Game of Thrones
Before watching HBO's Game of Thrones, I assumed the series would tend a bit more towards the blood-dripping Danish movie Valhalla Rising rather than fairy-tale stories a lá 'Lord of the Rings'; and for that I didn't really like the series at the beginning. But slowly, I found myself submitting to tales of bad kings, midget juggernauts, savage warriors and... dragons. And that happened probably because there aren't exactly good guys and bad guys here, like there are in Tolkien stories - and that is, of course, a simplification of his work. Another reason I relented to this series is because of the intriguing political backstage element that leads to the ever-happening dance of thrones. Oh, and did I mention the gratuitous nekkid-ness?
The Norfolk // Sydney, Australia
Of the slew of new spots having opened up in Sydney in the last six months, The Norfolk on Cleveland St in Surry Hills has been one fated with success. Owned by some of the same kids that have brought The Flinders back to life (and currently, it's incredibly quick onset of 'The Norms'), you'll undoubtedly find The Norfolk rammed with all kinds, vying for a bite, a beer and a spot in the garden out back. The aim of the game is to cultivate Aussie pub culture at it's best; and it's doing a pretty decent job so far - if only you could get a table!
Super Sad True Love Story
Super Sad True Love Story is the third book from the writer of the best selling Absurdistan, Gary Shteyngart. Incidentally, I read him name dropped in Flavorpill's Ultimate Hipster Reading list and in the same sentence as James Franco (they're buds, apaprently) just before I finished his latest offering. Don't let any of that put you off, or take away any of the sad scary brilliance of Super Sad True Love Story; written from the perspective of one 39 year old Lenny Abramov, son of Russian immigrants and in love with the impossibly cute and cruel Eunice Park. A satire that cuts to the bone, Super Sad True Love Story is exactly it's title. And it's good.

Kpop Calling: 2NE1 for Jeremy Scott & 2 New Vids

Oh, k-pop never ceases to amaze me. Check 2NE1. Have you seen the latest videos by those girls? Have you seen them rocking the new Jeremy Scott collection for Adidas? So join us in this colorful world of tiny little girls with big eyes and heavy use of auto-tune.

The first video was released back on June 27 and already has more than 7 million views. The expensive looking clip features the girls wearing spiked Louboutins, Cassete Playa looks that would make M.I.A. jealous, cool ass Misfits jackets and features a massive diamond made of glass plus any number of luxurious excess-ory you could think of to use on a song called 'I Am The Best'.

In a way, it's like a girl power answer to GD & Top's ''이가" (KNOCK OUT)', but the song is much more like 2011 electro for radio with a hint of '90s pop in the vocal line. It's a bit annoying but all highly addictive songs are, right?

2NE1 - I Am The Best

'Hate You' has a much more interesting structure: the instrumental is a bit french new wave and the vocals are cute; it could be a really bad ballad in the hands of other producers. The video, which managed to get over 700k views in less than 24 hours, is pretty much an Anime version of 'Sucker Punch', but not as bad as the movie was. Probably my favorite 2NE1 track ever.

2NE1 - I Hate You

And here are the girls modeling for Korean magazine, 1st Look in Jeremy Scott for Adidas Originals Collection. As usual, sporty looks (it's Adidas after all) with really bright colors, lots of animal prints and random teddy-bear accessories. Some cool over-the-top stuff in there, but I suspect that you might need to be a k-pop star to fully appreciate and wear the whole collection at once. Check the gallery below with all the looks from the mag and see you in the next k-pop update!

Brenmar goes Paper Running

paper running

I really dig it when Brenmar kicks the beat a little heavier. In fact, I prefer it. 'Paper Running' is a track that first popped up as part of an exclusive mix for Dazed Digital last year, and is a result of his recording sessions for his At It Again EP. The track opens with the trademark Brenmar coquette giggling his name before a dense electronic woodwind comes in to make way for a tightly restrained beat with plenty of boom in it's hit. And then there's that middle eastern flavor that gets your hips jiggling, back arching into a body roll with plenty of booty booming in the back.

K-k-keep my paper r-ru-running is the catch phrase laid up on top of this crazy Brenmar beat coming up with what it would sound like if Rainbow Arabia were to snake charm M.I.A. while a posse of belly dancers crump out a beat on some drums with their hips. Sick. The only problem is, at 3 mins and 21 seconds, the track seems to fly by and I'm left hanging for more. Check it:

IM//A\\PARTY Vol.02 - Summer mix

Brilliant artwork by Raul Luna. Check the profile we did on him a while ago!

It’s been too long since we did our last mix! We heard some of your critiques from last time round. We've allowed the songs to play almost their whole cycle; which means there are less tracks, but since we've only selected winners, that ain't no thang. The number of remixes also went down, as opposed to the 'features' on the mix; maybe it says something about music (it probably doesn’t). Anyway, we do hope you enjoy our IM//A\\PARTY  Vol.02 – Summer Mix...we have plans to make it something more of a regular up in here.

For those who've actually had the pleasure to be up at one of our parties, the future holds good news. Meanwhile, check out our personal Twitter feeds @caffarena and @christel_escosa to keep up to date with our DJ sets and random - no, REALLY random - tweets about life, the universe, our daily sins and everything else.

By the way, as I live in Brazil and Christel is currently in Australia, we decided to make this a summer mix. If you are reading this as snow is falling outside maybe you should listen to this in a couple of months.

Kidding, please listen to it now.

Mixtape // (Rye) RYEot powRR!

Rye Rye's long awaited mixtape, RYEot powRR is out! From the opening track, young Rye Rye goes out hard; RYEot powRR is relentlessly bang and pop, exactly like she represents. Whilst the transitions between tracks aren't exactly smooth, RYEot powRR more than makes up for it in something I can only call 'oh snap'. Hitting remixes and cutting raps on chart toppers like Miley Cyrus, Ciara, The Cataracts' 'Like A G6' and Willow Smith, Rye Rye's mixtape is recklessly cheeky and unashamedly fun. Rye Rye's got a kind of abandon and total lack of self consciousness that makes her a real joy. That kind of energy is infectious and thank god, cause that's something we could all use from time to time.

Check the playlist and then cop the mixtape below that:

1. ‘Go! Pop! Bang!’

2. ‘Bang dis Bit$# Out’

3. ‘Hardcore/Art School Girl’ ft. Telli/Ninjasonik

4. ‘Art School Boys’

5. ‘Witchdoctor’

6. ‘Back It Up’

7. ‘Diga Doom’

8. ‘DJ Go’ ft. DJ Say Wut

9. ‘Chase Money’

10. ‘Club Can’t Handle Me’ (Remix)

11. ‘We R Who We R’ (Remix)

12. ‘X-pill’ (Remix)

13. ‘Bang’ ft. M.I.A. (Remix)

14. ‘Party in the USA’ (Remix)

15. ‘Like a G6′ (Remix)

16. ‘Gimme Dat’ (Remix)

17. ‘Whip My Hair’ (Remix)

18. ‘Bring in the Katts’ ft. Porkcho

BONUS VIDEO: I don't pay attention to Miley Cyrus much (aside from the occasional SNL sketch parody and approval over her salvia incident) and this song doesn't really do it for me, guiltily or not, drunky town or elsewhere; but Rye Rye cut a rap and reduced Miley to a tinny chorus. It's fun. And damn, I get breathless just looking at Rye Rye dance:

Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus Rye Rye Edit
Blaqstarr's Rider Girl
HEYO // Blaqstarr

There was a point in time when we were scandalised because we thought young Rye Rye got all knocked up by the dude who was her channel to M.I.A. - we're talking bout Blaqstarr. Turns out this was not the case, and that Rye Rye's baby-daddy is somebody else, so, our bad for mistakenly believing something untrue.

Anyways, 2011 sees Blaqstarr's Divine EP being released via N.E.E.T. naturally; and the lead single is the laid back 'Rider Girl'. It's chilled but earnest, with a rolling beat that will no doubt be tricked out for all kinds of crazy remixes - I really enjoyed this little ditty. The video is that odd kinda 4am shiz that you woulda caught on some late night/early morn music video show with the sound and lights down low sometime in the early 90s. It's a little iPod Apple, a little 'Keep It Goin' Louder' and a whole lot of back to the future, cheesy/trippy/90s steez. Check it:

Rider Girl by Blaqstarr

I just noticed that one of my (future) summer hits ‘Sunshine’ - from Rye Rye that features a chilled M.I.A. – was missing from this blog. Shame on us! Although you might not need us to point your way over to this jam since it's only got over 1 million plays on Youtube!

The reason behind this sudden and well deserved Rye Rye fame can be blamed on M.I.A. collaboration. Rye Rye is a prodigy, employee/employer and friend to M.I.A. - Rye Rye is signed to Maya’s N.E.E.T. - she's also a back up dancer and singer for her.

Maya pulls singing duties for most of this track (beginning, chorus and end). And when we say 'sing' we actually mean it. There aren't any underground or rebellious aspects to the lyrics; in fact they're really naïve and cute, just some innocent bit of jump rope rhyme instead of the usual anti-government-rhetoric. Maya has actually helped do a song that's fun, catchy and colorful in a way that doesn't hurt your eyes. But as most people don’t change, you can also spot M.I.A. in one of the scenes wearing a “Fuck Google, Ask Me” T-shirt.

She kept it fairly nice and G-rated at least though, innit?

Although it does sound much more like Rye Rye is doing a feature here than the other way round, you still can see that Rye Rye has enough space to show how exciting she is – in case you didn’t know yet. Girl dances, laughs, raps and lightenss the song up with still enough space to rock a blonde 'do.

Rye Rye - Sunshine ft. M.I.A.

If you like summer, but you hate the sun there's a Smalltown DJs remix that is as fun but much more nocturnal and club oriented. My favorite bit is when the remixers make Rye Rye sound like Stacey Q in the ‘Two of Hearts’.

The 'La Musique' video makes it official: Yelle is God

screen shot 2010-10-07 at 10.53.42

Just when the M.I.A. camp think that they've got the gifs market cornered, the 'cool guys from We Are From LA' have executed this absolutely brilliant video for Yelle's latest single 'La Musique'.

EVERYone makes an appearance in this one, based in a world where Yelle makes the world turn; from Obama to Bieber to Barbie to Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro to Haiti and it's natural disaster and Katy Perry and her natural disasters. And of course, Yelle is somewhat featured - as the reigning deity of this crazy world. Ridonkulous and excellent.

And if you haven't already, do check the original single and remix for 'La Musique'.

Check the video, as well as some of our favourite star spotting moments below.

I Think I Might Get Shit For This (meh)

Okay. I'm gonna be honest. Because I already said it anyway in the last Theophilus post that I don't quite care right this minute about the latest demo that M.I.A. has dropped, this time featuring Blaqstarr - even though there is something about that I like. The minimal instrumentation and Blaqstarr's vocals have a hypnotic (monotonous?) quality to them, kinda reminding me of Cassie's 'Me And You', except nowhere near as hypnotically good.

In fact, instead of going over to to hear the track, what you SHOULD do is what I've set up for you here. Look, I've even appropriated M.I.A.'s gif and put it above for you to stare at, whilst you hit play on the video below and use that as a soundtrack instead:

But the real reason I decided to about it is because it gives me an excuse and context to post this random youtube video about 'Doing The Right Thing'.

Here's a message about cooling off with that racist shit, brought to you by M.I.A. and Samuel L Jackson:
