LOCAL NATIVES - GORILLA MANOR
To say that Local Natives are this year's Fleet Foxes isn't wrong, but not that right either. Local Natives are softer, brighter and lighter than their widely critiqued sort-of-counterparts. Gorilla Manor is a delicious debut that should be listened and loved for its own merits and there are 12 of them here; from the beautiful single 'Airplanes' to the epic journey of 'Stranger Things'. For fans of harmonic vocals, delicate guitars and gorgeous layers (and I bet there'll be a lot of you).
FAJ
You know about FAJ right? That's Fanny and Jessy as they are also known, and this duo have one of the coolest young labels coming straight out of London. They debuted their first range last year entitled 'I Hope You Die Soon' and they're also responsible for the infamous tee of the same name (and it's sibling, 'Suck It You Fuck') which I actually often find gets quite a warm reaction despite it's sentiment. This month they're showing their hotly anticipated sophomore collection for AW 2010 which no doubt will be full of their trademark wicked humor and edge. Definitely ones to watch.
LOST

Honestly, who isn’t? The sixth and final season of Lost, one of the best series ever created, just started and we are sure spending more time talking, reading and thinking about it than watching it. Well, from what we read some mysteries won’t be answered (the real meaning of the numbers, anyone?), but if there's something we've learned from accompanying Locke’s island friends (and enemies) is that the travel is always more enjoyable than the actual place it’s taking you to. Well, not if the smoke monster is trying to kill you.

Slow Blow
The latest station on the Drunky Town train line is in Sydney, Australia at a little club in the Spanish Quarter (actually it's just two Spanish shops next to each other on the same street or something like that in the CBD) called GoodGod, which plays host to soirée of the moment, Slow Blow. Word has it that in January, Karen O crashed Sydney's current cool kids party, but to be honest by that time everyone was too busy dancing and cutting loose in D-Town to care. And that's the true mark of a good time - when you find yourself twirling about without a care in the world. Or it could just mean you're trashed. Heh.
David Mitchell
You know those films where there are all these supposedly 'intertwined' stories and lives? Quite a cliché concept for both books and movies I suppose, but rarely does it really resonate in either medium. David Mitchell though (not the Peep Show one) manages to spin tales into tightly woven rugs that are quite fantastical yet believable, moving without being overly sentimental, eclectic and incredibly entertaining. He also writes straight narratives too, with just as much panache and verve. I just (re)read Number9Dream though any and all of David Mitchell's books are highly recommended...and he's got a newie coming out this year. EXCITEMENT.

Aeroplane's Best of November

aeroplane

I've been working like a slave lately and it made me miss the last two monthly mixes from Aeroplane - but not this month. Because this month I'm finally learning how to be more organized and, of course, (here it goes, my most commonly used line in this blog) this month's is the best one so far. Seriously, I don't know if it's because I didn't know most of the good tracks on there and couldn't think of ways to combine them or something; but they all go really well with each other in a way only Aeroplane could edit.

Well, I suppose there isn't anybody better to pick, mix and release new songs every month than these two Belgians. Check the amazing tracklist after the break, play the mix and go to SoundCloud to download it!

Aeroplane's August mix

aeroplane

After a late mix in July, Aeroplane already made up their mind about the best songs in August. There is the new Metronomy single remixed by Wild Cheese, LCD Soundsystem's Nike single remixed by Prins Thomas, IM//UR's favorite remix of the month Riton & Primary 1 remixed by In Flagranti and the bloggers much loved song by Boys Noize and Erol Alkan. Why have you not downloaded it yet?

Check the whole tracklist below and become a happier person with this delicious sounding mix.

Aeroplane remixes MGMT

mgmt

Aeroplane tricked me into something that I'm not particularly proud of. And that is to listen to MGMT's 'Kids' again. That's because this amazing duo remixed the song (actually, who didn't?) for the latest re-re-re-release that finally included the video (check it here).

Let's just say that there is no bad weather with Aeroplane, but this would be a much more enjoyable remix if it was done before we all got sick of the original. Can we, please, have this with a different acapella?

Interview // Au Revoir Simone

The Girls

Everyone seems to have a bit of a crush on all-girl keyboard trio Au Revoir Simone; consisting of pretty girls that epitomise geek and their self-proclaimed ‘sandbox’ chic.

They're like a perfectly whipped pavlova: light, fluffy and crunchy, topped with some smooth cream and a bit of tangy fruit. As leggy and willowy as their music are Annie, Erika and Heather. With 5 keyboards, an omni-chord, a drum machine and a glockenspiel amongst other miscellaneous electronic paraphernalia, their synth-driven compositions are quite delectable.

After meeting on a train home to New York City, Annie (keys and vox) and Erika (ditto) bonded over keyboards. Whilst previously in a band called ‘Dirty On Purpose’, Heather (on the drum machine, keyboards and vocals) bought her first synth and it apparently changed her life. Their combined ambition for triple keyboard action culminated in a regular bedroom bash around on the keys that inevitably progressed from the girls just jamming together, to a more concerted effort.

For some reason, despite being from America - whatever you might define ‘American’ female indie-pop as sounding like – Au Revoir Simone don’t come across as ‘American’. Daydreamy and romantic in both music and appearance, listening to them gets one feeling rather sentimental. Their songs are strangely conflicting; with melancholic lyrics yet warm and airy melodies, twirled gracefully into wistful Casio concoctions.

Often minimal and lo-fi, Au Revoir Simone somehow comes across as quite orchestral, with delicately woven soundscapes that are both ponderous and playful. This ménage a trois of keyboards will warm the cockles of every Casio-tone aficionado’s heart with their speculative and candy-coloured music. Blushingly flirtatious, Au Revoir Simone is a winsome trio producing lucid and luminous pop.

Sexy Sébastien goes the extra mile (well, Kilometer)
sebastientellier-photo
Monsieur Sexuality himself

Okay, he's a little beardy and a little weirdy for me, but personal sexual charisma aside, Sébastien Tellier's musical sexiness factors much higher as Monsieur Sexuality finally releases 'Kilometer'. The slinky slow burner that was co-written and produced by Daft Punk's Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo gets run through the remix mill by A-Trak, Arpanet and Aeroplane.

Trizzy can do no wrong for 'Kilometer', roping in big bro Dave 1 of Chromeo fame (who I think I'm a little bit in love with) to co-produce, coming out with something that's gleefully irresistible and pumping with disco jive, making 'Kilometer' boogie, woogie and tease across the dance floor. Busy P already gave it props as the 'remix of the year'. Arpanet keeps it dark, dirty and echoey; reminiscent of sexy times in some kind of cave, and our current favourites Aeroplane give 'Kilometer' the aptly named 'italo 84' treatment.

A love letter to Aeroplane

The loved one

Dear Aeroplane (aka Vito De Luca and Stephen Fasano),

You already had my heart when you did that incredible remix for Friendly Fires featuring the lovely ladies of Au Revoir Simone - not to mention the Shortwave Set, Sebastien Tellier and Grace Jones remixes that I also adore. From there I went looking for your very own material and I finally understood what Balearic truly meant...yet now you go one step beyond.

In regards to the Disco Balearica mix that came out with the latest edition of the English magazine Mixmag, I'm speechless to say anything except that you, Aeroplane, have just become my favorite producers. Sorry for not going to see you when you played in Brazil, but I just wasn't that into you then. Please come back soon!

Truly yours.
