Beyoncé - 4
We swear this isn't an ironic listening. We love Beyoncé and 4. OK, we might unironically skip straight to track 5, 'Party', produced by Kanye West and with rap by Andre3000, because we ain't no stay-home-mums that need all those ballads about being broken hearted and finding the right person. But, after that, the album turns into a beautiful compilation of classic r'n'b, soul and a bit of sweat-inducing booty tracks - not too many though - that sound surprisingly courageous considering the actual state of pop music. And for that, we bow down and hail Queen B. P.S. Get the deluxe version, for those extra couple of amazing tracks.
The name of this label has been interpreted in many ways; from 'bass-seekey' to 'base-ike', but the correct way describes exactly what this label is about: BASIC. Bassike delivers easily breezily cut staples with an interesting little twist that keeps them from being your run of the mill. For those that live in climates like that of Australia (where Bassike hails from) or Brazil, you'll know how easy it is to make fashion faux pas when the weather gets hot and the prospect of wearing anything but a bathing suit becomes slightly unappealing; Bassike is all and everything you need.
Game of Thrones
Before watching HBO's Game of Thrones, I assumed the series would tend a bit more towards the blood-dripping Danish movie Valhalla Rising rather than fairy-tale stories a lá 'Lord of the Rings'; and for that I didn't really like the series at the beginning. But slowly, I found myself submitting to tales of bad kings, midget juggernauts, savage warriors and... dragons. And that happened probably because there aren't exactly good guys and bad guys here, like there are in Tolkien stories - and that is, of course, a simplification of his work. Another reason I relented to this series is because of the intriguing political backstage element that leads to the ever-happening dance of thrones. Oh, and did I mention the gratuitous nekkid-ness?
The Norfolk // Sydney, Australia
Of the slew of new spots having opened up in Sydney in the last six months, The Norfolk on Cleveland St in Surry Hills has been one fated with success. Owned by some of the same kids that have brought The Flinders back to life (and currently, it's incredibly quick onset of 'The Norms'), you'll undoubtedly find The Norfolk rammed with all kinds, vying for a bite, a beer and a spot in the garden out back. The aim of the game is to cultivate Aussie pub culture at it's best; and it's doing a pretty decent job so far - if only you could get a table!
Super Sad True Love Story
Super Sad True Love Story is the third book from the writer of the best selling Absurdistan, Gary Shteyngart. Incidentally, I read him name dropped in Flavorpill's Ultimate Hipster Reading list and in the same sentence as James Franco (they're buds, apaprently) just before I finished his latest offering. Don't let any of that put you off, or take away any of the sad scary brilliance of Super Sad True Love Story; written from the perspective of one 39 year old Lenny Abramov, son of Russian immigrants and in love with the impossibly cute and cruel Eunice Park. A satire that cuts to the bone, Super Sad True Love Story is exactly it's title. And it's good.

IM//A\\PARTY Vol.02 - Summer mix

Brilliant artwork by Raul Luna. Check the profile we did on him a while ago!

It’s been too long since we did our last mix! We heard some of your critiques from last time round. We've allowed the songs to play almost their whole cycle; which means there are less tracks, but since we've only selected winners, that ain't no thang. The number of remixes also went down, as opposed to the 'features' on the mix; maybe it says something about music (it probably doesn’t). Anyway, we do hope you enjoy our IM//A\\PARTY  Vol.02 – Summer Mix...we have plans to make it something more of a regular up in here.

For those who've actually had the pleasure to be up at one of our parties, the future holds good news. Meanwhile, check out our personal Twitter feeds @caffarena and @christel_escosa to keep up to date with our DJ sets and random - no, REALLY random - tweets about life, the universe, our daily sins and everything else.

By the way, as I live in Brazil and Christel is currently in Australia, we decided to make this a summer mix. If you are reading this as snow is falling outside maybe you should listen to this in a couple of months.

Kidding, please listen to it now.

Stopmakingme remixes Bag Raiders
HIYA // Stopmakingme

If ever there was a summer choon for SS 2010/11, Bag Raiders' 'Sunlight' has got to be it. Voiced by Dan Black, I've said before that 'Sunlight' is perfect for these days (in the Southern Hemisphere) when all you want to do is sip drinks in the pool - and this track will even rouse you from your heatstruck stupor to dance a little.

Stopmakingme has just released his remix of the track; and for the first two minutes or so, it's a more serious, pared back, cloudier version of the sunlight drenched original. Then at 2:10, the track turns a corner and the sun comes streaming on down. I really do love the lightbulb moment on a track when everything comes together and makes sense.

Even better is the clever use of another of our favourites from Bag Raiders' album, called 'Snake Charmer', a cut of which is slyly inserted to great effect.

Correction: my bad, it ain't Snake Charmer (though it really does sound similar), but a cut from the original track's intro!

Nice work from Stopmakingme, get it:

Bag Raiders // Sunlight

screen shot 2010-12-20 at 11.53.10

We have this monkey story in my family. It's from when I was still a baby in the Philippines; my parents had gone out for the night and left me with my nanny. Depending on who you ask, my nanny was either in the bathroom or talking on the phone when the next little bit occurred. So, whilst my nanny was not attending to me, one of the monkeys that lived on our land had climbed up and into my window, and was about to do god knows what (kidnap me to live in the trees? Eat me alive? I have no idea, I don't have any recollection of this happening) when my parents arrived back home to check up on me to find the primate perched upon my crib, where it had no business being, according to my father.

Anyway. Bag Raiders have a fresh video out of their new single, 'Sunlight', which follows the weekend of a Scarlett Johansson type going to her job (?) at the zoo and taking one of the monkeys home for the weekend. It's a cute enough premise with a super cute girl and a cool little monkey, until it starts to creep me out when the monkey gets kinda cheeky and bad ass, and like...human male-ish. Great summer tune though, perfect for these days (in the Southern Hemisphere) when all you want to do is sip drinks in the pool - and this track will even rouse you from your heatstruck stupor to dance a little.

Bag Raiders in the House (mix)

bag raiders

You might remember my last post about Bag Raiders. I was talking about their (amazing) disco mix for Triple J and I got emotional. So for not wanting to cause a scene again I’m going to keep this intro for their newest mix short. It’s a house mix that starts with one of the fiercest songs ever crafted – “If Madonna Calls (Junior's House Mix Radio Edit)” by Junior Vasquez – and then explores more and more elements of house music without ever becoming boring or sounding like music targeted at playboys.

Listen to it's excellence below, check the tracklist and improve your shit little sets [sorry]. The weekend begins now!

Bag Raiders Disco Mix

Once upon a time, we decided to have a party with bands/DJs we like. One of them happened to fall upon the celebration of the opening of this very blog and featured one of our favourite duos, Bag Raiders (and Miami Horror, although he totes got barrado no baile and stayed at the airport). That night we were party to one of the best DJ sets of our young lives.

Not only technical perfect, Bag Raiders' set has something that's even more difficult to find these days: personality. So, listening to these guys, you'll hear your Hype Machine hits, but you'll also get tunes that you’ve never heard before that will compell you to stick around to hear what else they'll pull out of The Bag.

It's been a while since then, but the boys have finally released their debut single and are now doing a live tour (which includes them coming back to Brazil as well!), and they've managed to keep themselves in my list of favorite DJs. Their disco mix for Australia's Triple J illustrates my point brilliantly. So no more talking, it’s time for some dancing!

MIXTAPE // Bag Raiders' Pina Colada Podcasta
what babes

YAY for Bag Raiders! They've finally released their self-titled debut album and to celebrate they've kicked it back with some proper CHOONS selected for those mourning the arrival of Autumn and for those awaiting the summer time fun; the Pina Colada Podcasta is complete with Summer Breezes, Shy Guys, Brazilian Affairs and chill out drunkytown vibes in the sun. Pretty damn sexy.

Tracklist and commentary by Chris and Jack below for each track below, then go cop the mixtape in the direct download link after that.

1. Air France - 'Beach Party'
"Is there a better kind of party than a beach party? Lovely song from a really great summertime band. Put it on and grab a cocktail by the pool."

2. Amadou & Mariam - 'Magossa'
"Love this album. Beautiful and exotic song. Kind of song that makes me want to go on holidays. More balaphon!"

3. Barrington Levy - 'Murderer'
"Rude boy reggae! Subject matter ain't that chilled but find me a better song to sip a cold beer to in a hammock in the sun."

4. UB40 - 'Bring Me Your Cup'
"These are the kind of UB40 jams I really like. "I've got the bottle, bring me your cup, we'll drink it down till the sun comes up." Nuff said."

5. Roberto Pregadio - 'Funky Chopper (Luca Toni & Luca Del Giudice Remix)'
"By the time you read the track title summer might be over. Where's my white suit at?! Props to the two Lucas on remix duty. "

6. George Duke - 'Brazilian Love Affair'
"George Duke, what a dude! Love this song. Check the cuica in the weird second level Mario Bros. break at 3.10 - man alive!!"

7. Isley Brothers - 'Summer Breeze'
"I wish my mind was made of jasmine. One of my favourite songs ever! How good is the guitar sound too? Amazing."

8. Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 - 'Pais Tropical'
"You step out of your beach shack, feel the warm sand between your toes, a lady wearing a swimsuit and an open white shirt comes over and hands you a pina colada, singing as she takes you to the party where the rest of the band is playing... Life is beautiful."

9. Fania All-Stars - 'Ella Fue'
"Summer love never sounded so good.. These pianos, horns and group vocals will have you wiggling like the worm in your mescal..."

10. Black Star - 'Brown Skin Lady'
"Mos Def and Tailb Kweli ruling things as always.. The beat sounds like a

summer afternoon and they bring the heat on the verses, especially digging on Mos' verse where he rhymes everything with "ooh"."

11. Diana King - 'Shy Guy'
"Love all that 90's reggae influenced pop with a good time feel. Great music to play beach volleyball to. Oh lord have mercy mercy mercy!!!!"

12. Dizu Plaatjies, Lungiswa Plaatjies, Nicolas Gongxeka & The Dizu Plaatjies Ibuyambo Ensemble - 'Giya Kasiyamore (Danse Afrika)'
"When the sun goes down and you step off the beach you can hear a faint balafon being played somewhere in the distance. As you follow the sound deep into the jungle you hear the beating of drums. You part the vines to reveal a crazy dance party and these guys are playing all night!!"

13. Night Rider - 'Fun Time Deh Ya'
"Gotta have a dancehall jam to get you through those bus rides from beach to beach. Lucky the bus has monkey bartenders that make you drinks in coconuts!!!"

Bag Raiders make art in the new vid for 'Way Back Home'
Hiya Jack and Chris

Bag Raiders have just released the video to accompany the first single off of their long awaited self-titled debut album, coming out via Modular on October 1st. The track is called 'Way Back Home' and demonstrates a darker, more weighty direction than the soaring heights that their ubiquitous hit 'Shooting Stars' took.

'Way Back Home' shows a more serious side to the duo; exhibiting traits similar to two other brilliant Australian synthpop duos, Cut Copy and The Presets. The track also works the 'tribal drums' in the club angle to give it a chance in the more serious club arena. It ain't no 'Shooting Stars' but a great track nonetheless, and equally destined to be played to death.

The Kris Moyes directed video, shows a decidedly different style to their 'Shooting Stars' video effort; instead of surfing cars through computer made skies, Jack and Chris run around a darkened studio in this one-shot-wonder making art, whilst some pretty scratched and painted effects are layered over the top.

Meanwhile, we're waiting with anxious anticipation to finally hear the album, the cover of which looks like this (then check the video below that):

Here's the vid:
