BEFORE TODAY by Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti
It doesn’t take much to make me feel stupid. Trying to find the words to describe the debut album of Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti at 4AD is just one of many examples I could give you. To me, ‘Before Today’ sounds like an album that Kevin Barnes could be recording if he loved goth bands more than funk ones. Or like the cold wave genre entering a multicoloured psychedelic stage instead of glazing at it's own depression. Don’t mind my threadbare examples; this is the album that will make it onto every interesting top 10 of the year and you don’t wanna miss it.
Nathan Smith
I can't resist (probably overpriced) basics-with-a-twist. My wardrobe, full of T by Wang, Oak, Bassike and yes, American Apparel is proof of this; and since in Australia, a new favourite has emerged in the form of Nathan Smith. His selection of supersoft tees, tanks and dresses have sucked me into buying multiples of a number of styles in different colourways. You just can't go wrong with these though! Addictively and endlessly wearable - and not in actual fact, overpriced in the slightlest - Nathan Smith is the way forward for your wardrobe.
Freaks and Geeks
I don’t think any series will treat teenagers the same way that Freaks and Geeks did almost 10 years ago. Although relying on every teen American cliché they could, this series was the closest thing to reality you could get whilst still being something fun and interesting to watch – cause, you know, life is boring. With bands like The Who, The Clash and XTC being either part of episodes or the soundtrack, this 80’s based cult show was short-lived (only 18 episodes), but long enough to enrich the careers of some young actors (i.e. James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Busy Philipps and, erm, Linda Cardellini) and is greatly missed. Can we have a movie about them meeting again in the 00’s?
Rong He
Once, a friend of mine wanted to take me to this 'cheap Chinese restaurant', situated in the heart of Liberdade, a Japanese neighborhood in São Paulo. When we got there the place was packed, but because it looked cheesy and kinda poor, I didn't want to wait it out. It took another friend for me to go back there and fall in love with it. Now, every time the mood for some freshly made noodles (you can watch the chief making the noodle dough through a window) framed in some horribly painted pink walls takes me, I go for Rong He. Did I mention the food is also incredibly generous and cheap?
The Selby Is In Your Place
The ultimate in peeping tom into other, cooler, more fashionable, richer, quirkier and more-hipster-than-thou lives is Todd Selby's The Selby. Having previously been an internet only voyeur's dream, Todd has just last month released The Selby Is In Your Place, a coffee table tome full of twee drawings, colourful interiors and people showering. Half of the images in the books are favourites from the website and the other is stuff he hasn't published online yet. So go check it out, maybe buy it if you can to make your crappy coffee table in your crappy apartment that little bit cooler with pictures of someone else's cool stuff.

White Noise by Clock Opera

white noise cover pic

Guy Connelly's aptly named project Clock Opera is just that - Guy being the maestro conducting a symphony of samples, cuts and percussion. And whilst here in Sydney the air is smelling sweet and the sun shining bright enough to burn you to a fluorescent crisp, if you happen to be in grey London, seek some - metaphorical - sunshine in the Levi's Ones to Watch program; where Clock Opera happens to be one of the acts hitting the stage.

I keep getting the urge to say Clopera. Or Operock. Anyway.

Clock Opera dropped the b-side to their first single ' White Noise' called 'Alouette' over at Discodust a month or so back, which brought to my mind a kind of weird Coldplay/Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 'Pure Imagination' collision, in a good way. Here's single 'White Noise', a soundscape full of ambition; the project harbours rather grand sonic ideas. It's only in 192 kpbs so go hit Puregroove for the vinyl.

Dalstonites Django Django hand over a marchingly good remix; starting out with a clanging, robotically dancey bit of syncopation, before the drums kick in and the epic delay filters on. It moves on to be more epic sounding than the original in some ways. This remix is kept grounded though with Django Django turning up the progression that the track is built around in muzzy guitar form - which, in the original is much more subtley synthy.

P.S. Billed with Clock Opera at the Levi's Ones to Watch gig are also Marina & The Diamonds and Wolf Gang who will all be playing in Hoxton at the Bar & Grill on the 18th. Go check 'em.

PAPERCUTS: Dreamy, Melancholic and Rusty
Papercuts
Papercuts: Jason Quever

My love for Papercuts started with my love of another band, The Go! Team. I knew nothing of Jason Quever and his project until I got send his EP, 'Future Primitive' featuring a remix from the long adored The Go! Team - as well as remixes from The Ruby Suns and Django Django. And as soon as I heard the first opening sequence, I knew something big was coming...

Think Panda Bear, Beach House, Department Of Eagles and those bands that are going to make it onto Rough Trade's 'best of' list. It's a beautiful, melodic, soulful piece of alternative rock. Take 'Future Primitive' for example, the first single of his new album You Can Have What You Want is a dreamily melancholic song, rusty with a '60s aura - blame it on the vintage organs and reverberating vocals that are recorded completely analogically.

You Can Have What You Want was released on the 14th of April through Gnomonsong (USA) and Memphis Industries (UK) and it's the third album from Papercuts - and in my freshly-turned-fan opinion, it's his best effort so far. Alex Scally from Beach House helped him shape this hazy pop masterpiece.

But back to the EP... When you heard the first xylophone notes you will recognize Go! Team's remix. Brighton's best contemporary band transform 'Future Primitive' into one of their beautiful instrumental songs featuring only some 'la-la-la-la's from Jason. It's impossible not to fall in love with it.

The Ruby Suns' remix of 'Future Primitive' sound similar to something Animal Collective would do as a comeback single. It has so many interesting layers and moments that you might end up loving this version more than the original. Delicate electronic alternative pop, this is what Django Django delivers in his sweet remix.

One of the best EPs of the year - no doubt about that. Can more interesting bands starting remixing each other? Kthanksbye.
