BEFORE TODAY by Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti
It doesn’t take much to make me feel stupid. Trying to find the words to describe the debut album of Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti at 4AD is just one of many examples I could give you. To me, ‘Before Today’ sounds like an album that Kevin Barnes could be recording if he loved goth bands more than funk ones. Or like the cold wave genre entering a multicoloured psychedelic stage instead of glazing at it's own depression. Don’t mind my threadbare examples; this is the album that will make it onto every interesting top 10 of the year and you don’t wanna miss it.
Nathan Smith
I can't resist (probably overpriced) basics-with-a-twist. My wardrobe, full of T by Wang, Oak, Bassike and yes, American Apparel is proof of this; and since in Australia, a new favourite has emerged in the form of Nathan Smith. His selection of supersoft tees, tanks and dresses have sucked me into buying multiples of a number of styles in different colourways. You just can't go wrong with these though! Addictively and endlessly wearable - and not in actual fact, overpriced in the slightlest - Nathan Smith is the way forward for your wardrobe.
Freaks and Geeks
I don’t think any series will treat teenagers the same way that Freaks and Geeks did almost 10 years ago. Although relying on every teen American cliché they could, this series was the closest thing to reality you could get whilst still being something fun and interesting to watch – cause, you know, life is boring. With bands like The Who, The Clash and XTC being either part of episodes or the soundtrack, this 80’s based cult show was short-lived (only 18 episodes), but long enough to enrich the careers of some young actors (i.e. James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Busy Philipps and, erm, Linda Cardellini) and is greatly missed. Can we have a movie about them meeting again in the 00’s?
Rong He
Once, a friend of mine wanted to take me to this 'cheap Chinese restaurant', situated in the heart of Liberdade, a Japanese neighborhood in São Paulo. When we got there the place was packed, but because it looked cheesy and kinda poor, I didn't want to wait it out. It took another friend for me to go back there and fall in love with it. Now, every time the mood for some freshly made noodles (you can watch the chief making the noodle dough through a window) framed in some horribly painted pink walls takes me, I go for Rong He. Did I mention the food is also incredibly generous and cheap?
The Selby Is In Your Place
The ultimate in peeping tom into other, cooler, more fashionable, richer, quirkier and more-hipster-than-thou lives is Todd Selby's The Selby. Having previously been an internet only voyeur's dream, Todd has just last month released The Selby Is In Your Place, a coffee table tome full of twee drawings, colourful interiors and people showering. Half of the images in the books are favourites from the website and the other is stuff he hasn't published online yet. So go check it out, maybe buy it if you can to make your crappy coffee table in your crappy apartment that little bit cooler with pictures of someone else's cool stuff.

It's Another Frankmusik Video (with Holly Valance)

Vince and Holly sitting in a tree (K-I-S-S-I-N-G)

Yep, we've got another one for you. Don't worry he's not 'lost' this time - just making the video for upcoming single 'Confusion Girl' featuring Holly Valance of formerly of Neighbors, 'Kiss Kiss' and Prison Break fame as his video girl.

UPDATE: And here it finally is in it's entirety

Confusion Girl by Frankmusik

'Confusion Girl' is the track that was co-produced with Stuart Price (who is, amongst others, of Madge, Missy and Gwen production fame, not to mention his various pseudonyms doing remixes), due out on the 13th of July.

Apparently Holly and Vince have been working on an album together (gosh, who ISN'T doing something with Frankmusik these days), when he roped her in for the video. And she roped him in for a kissing scene at the end of the clip. OOOOOOOO. Check it below.

Behind the Scenes with Vince and Holly

UPDATE: So we got this remix a few days back and it's Don Diablo's remix of Confusion Girl which is actually quite a lovely affair, cutting Vince's vocals in a dreamily melancholic and longing rendition of the track. If I'm not mistaken Diablo also cuts in some oddly refreshing acoustic sounding drums and guitar in the middle of the song amongst the synths. A really great remix (with a very appropriate title) that travels and grows. Nice one Don.

Classixx x Jeppe x The Cobrasnake x Kitsuné

Classixx-video

"Do you really think you're still relevant right now?

I'm so passé, like, I'm surprised people even wanna talk to me anymore."

This conversation happened last Wednesday between a drunky IM // UR and Mark Hunter (aka The Cobrasnake) at the Adidas House Party in São Paulo. Even being the nicest guy we met lately, we all have to agree that Cobrasnake's photoblog was only special when created because it was one of the first around. And although it was one of those that started the hype of party photographers around the world, it's lack of technique or concept to make it go beyond - wait a minute...at least Mark is travelling around the globe partying while I'm at my computer writing about deepness and stuff.

But this text wasn't about this. This text is about how Cobrasnake's photoblog might be passé, but the man himself isn't. If you want proof you might want to check the two track EP Kitsuné x The Cobrasnake. Yes, one of the hottest labels around the world asked the partyman to shoot two videos for Classixx and Acid Girls new songs. And the results? Well, it lacks the same things as his photos... But the songs are great!

The Classixx's 'I'll Get You' features strong drums, bright '80s synths and Jeppe (ex-Junior Senior) on the vocals along some random French Danish girl saying things likes "sometimes you just sit there and think and nothing happens" - thanks to Christian Rosenberg for that! While Acid Girls's 'Wake Up' doesn't have a video out yet, but it has the bouncy Frankmusik doing the vocals and that should be enough by now.

Classixx - I'll Get You feat. Jeppe

Kitsuné x The Cobrasnake - or should we say Classixx x Jeppe & Acid Girls x Frankmusik? - will be out by the 1st of June.

Say hiya to Ellie Goulding
Ellie-Goulding
Ellie Goulding

So we've been analysing, comparing and contrasting Little Boots and La Roux for what seems like forever now, but check it, another Ellie is on the block. Ellie Goulding is the latest London girl making waves in the sea of wanna-be starlets.

The diversity of her influences (like folk and dubstep) will make her a bit of a wildcard. Which path will she go down? Checking her out totally gave me an excuse to dig up Sam Sparro's 'Black and Gold' and it's Russ Chimes remix - both which I unashamedly adore; the original in it's synthesiser drenched glory and Russ Chimes' uplifting extended edit complete with it's rocking synth-pop breakdown.

Anyway, back to Ellie Goulding - she has a superbly agile voice, ethereal with a bubblegum pop tone in there too. In 'Black + Gold' these vocals are laid on top of sustained, echoey synths, sparsely picky guitars set against handclaps that drive the beat forward. The other tracks I've heard reinforce the Imogen Heap cues, and also remind me something of pseudo-lezzas Tatu, and real-life lezza-sistaz, Tegan and Sara

On second glance though, Goulding is more like a crossbreed between a far more electronic, sped up version of Laura Marling accompanied by an Imogen Heap kind of resonance; though to me she doesn't have a very 'British' sound to her music at all.

To throw in a reference that might put her a little more into context, Frankmusik produced 'Wish I Stayed'. Vincent Frank on production duties sees an ever so subtle use of his beloved vocal glitches - used with a light hand though, and I detect some kind of autotune in there amongst the stomping drums interspersed with double kicks.

She's exciting cause she's fresh. I'm getting a little tired of seeing the La//Boots all over the shop, despite loving their music. The only thing about Goulding is that despite enjoying the tracks that have been floating around online, she's been reminding me little too much of the Pokemon Movie soundtrack that I used to love in my darkest pop hour of need at thirteen. That might be because I was made to watch 'Dragonball Evolution' last night. But let's see if anything gets made of little Miss Ellie Goulding shall we?

Telepathe - Chrome's on it
Telepathe
Melissa Livaudais and Busy Gangnes (or vice versa)

As I always say, things don't die, they just get boring - until they get exciting again. So if you were there crying, (almost) three years after of the death of new rave, you better get your glow on - at least to check the new video for Telepathe's 'Chrome's On It'.

Poor special effects (mostly made with the help of a green screen), a bright color bar palette - as in television test patterns - and some wacko wayfarers are combined in one tacky video directed by Andrew Jive that will test your ironic side to the max. Rave on, innit?

Telepathe - Chrome's on It

Not enjoying the video will tell you that you've kinda evolved from that scene, whilst not enjoying the music experience will prove that your taste is not like it used to be. In 'Chrome's On It', these two arty New York girls reference shoegaze, Coco Rosie and synths that modulate in an upward swing to create their oh-so-unique bright new music.

Their terrific debut Dance Mother was produced by David Sitek from TV on the Radio was released by IAMSOUND Records on the 14th of April in the US. You can check remixes from Frankmusik and The Mae Shi for the song below.
