On first listen to 'Answer', I didn't quite get my head around it. It's the first song to be taken from the first solo album of Grizzly Bear vocalist and producer Chris Taylor, entitled Dreams Come True, under the nom de plume of CANT. 'Answer' takes a little while to warm up for me; but as soon as the beat kicked in, and the (admittedly rather delicate) air horns faded out at around the one minute mark I was enthralled. That eerily out of tune piano, the odd synth sounds, the susurrant vocals and even the initially annoying airhorns had won me over by the end of the spookily bent groove of this foot tapping track.
In a reciprocal, and, so far excellent move, Taylor had George Lewis Jr of Twin Shadow fame assist him in the creation of Dreams Come True, which was smashed out in "a week and a half in a bedroom connected to be used to be Allair Studios, where Grizzly Bear also recorded their lauded 2009 release Veckatimest", according to the press release.
As an odd little aside, it occurred to me that it might be quite a scary prospect releasing something on your own whilst or after being in a successful group effort. But in the case of CANT it seems that Taylor is heading into similarly acclaimed territory as Grizzly Bear. Check it:
