Beyoncé - 4
We swear this isn't an ironic listening. We love Beyoncé and 4. OK, we might unironically skip straight to track 5, 'Party', produced by Kanye West and with rap by Andre3000, because we ain't no stay-home-mums that need all those ballads about being broken hearted and finding the right person. But, after that, the album turns into a beautiful compilation of classic r'n'b, soul and a bit of sweat-inducing booty tracks - not too many though - that sound surprisingly courageous considering the actual state of pop music. And for that, we bow down and hail Queen B. P.S. Get the deluxe version, for those extra couple of amazing tracks.
The name of this label has been interpreted in many ways; from 'bass-seekey' to 'base-ike', but the correct way describes exactly what this label is about: BASIC. Bassike delivers easily breezily cut staples with an interesting little twist that keeps them from being your run of the mill. For those that live in climates like that of Australia (where Bassike hails from) or Brazil, you'll know how easy it is to make fashion faux pas when the weather gets hot and the prospect of wearing anything but a bathing suit becomes slightly unappealing; Bassike is all and everything you need.
Game of Thrones
Before watching HBO's Game of Thrones, I assumed the series would tend a bit more towards the blood-dripping Danish movie Valhalla Rising rather than fairy-tale stories a lá 'Lord of the Rings'; and for that I didn't really like the series at the beginning. But slowly, I found myself submitting to tales of bad kings, midget juggernauts, savage warriors and... dragons. And that happened probably because there aren't exactly good guys and bad guys here, like there are in Tolkien stories - and that is, of course, a simplification of his work. Another reason I relented to this series is because of the intriguing political backstage element that leads to the ever-happening dance of thrones. Oh, and did I mention the gratuitous nekkid-ness?
The Norfolk // Sydney, Australia
Of the slew of new spots having opened up in Sydney in the last six months, The Norfolk on Cleveland St in Surry Hills has been one fated with success. Owned by some of the same kids that have brought The Flinders back to life (and currently, it's incredibly quick onset of 'The Norms'), you'll undoubtedly find The Norfolk rammed with all kinds, vying for a bite, a beer and a spot in the garden out back. The aim of the game is to cultivate Aussie pub culture at it's best; and it's doing a pretty decent job so far - if only you could get a table!
Super Sad True Love Story
Super Sad True Love Story is the third book from the writer of the best selling Absurdistan, Gary Shteyngart. Incidentally, I read him name dropped in Flavorpill's Ultimate Hipster Reading list and in the same sentence as James Franco (they're buds, apaprently) just before I finished his latest offering. Don't let any of that put you off, or take away any of the sad scary brilliance of Super Sad True Love Story; written from the perspective of one 39 year old Lenny Abramov, son of Russian immigrants and in love with the impossibly cute and cruel Eunice Park. A satire that cuts to the bone, Super Sad True Love Story is exactly it's title. And it's good.

NEW Jeremy Scott for Adidas

Speaking of Jeremy Scott and 2NE1, here's a geeze at some of Jeremy Scott's FW for Adidas 2011/12. I don't really buy into the Jeremy Scott hype, and I think a chunk of his stuff sucks, but I must admit that sometimes, he gets it pretty damn right. Somehow, with their over the top, fun and downright ridiculous (and yes, often ugly) designs, between him and Adidas, they've grown a cult of superfans who'll buy that shit out the second it hits the shelves.

So, if any of you are superfans or just supercurious and happen to live in Sydney, the latest collection is launching next Wednesday the 3rd of August at The Atrium. You can get your hot little hands on the shit before the rabble have access to it the next day instore. Check the invite below and RSVP if you're down.

Here's a cool little behind-the-scenes film of the shoot for the lookbook, featuring some impractical, impossible and impressive pieces from the collection.

Check out some more of the collection below:

I dig this two piece track set, even though it would make you look like a little boy about to hop into your racing car shaped bed. GIMME.

These kicks are for Pebbles, references his SS 2010 Flintstones themed collection. Bone up.

Another take on that teddy fetish:

I'ma post the next two looks just because I think they are beyond fugly. But just like the dude in the film says, it doesn't mean that I don't respect. Or that I would say no if I someone gave me pieces. Except maybe to the stuff below:

Check the gallery below for some more of the lookbook, and Sydneysiders, don't forget to RSVP. Methinks there will be free drinks.

Kpop Calling: 2NE1 for Jeremy Scott & 2 New Vids

Oh, k-pop never ceases to amaze me. Check 2NE1. Have you seen the latest videos by those girls? Have you seen them rocking the new Jeremy Scott collection for Adidas? So join us in this colorful world of tiny little girls with big eyes and heavy use of auto-tune.

The first video was released back on June 27 and already has more than 7 million views. The expensive looking clip features the girls wearing spiked Louboutins, Cassete Playa looks that would make M.I.A. jealous, cool ass Misfits jackets and features a massive diamond made of glass plus any number of luxurious excess-ory you could think of to use on a song called 'I Am The Best'.

In a way, it's like a girl power answer to GD & Top's ''이가" (KNOCK OUT)', but the song is much more like 2011 electro for radio with a hint of '90s pop in the vocal line. It's a bit annoying but all highly addictive songs are, right?

2NE1 - I Am The Best

'Hate You' has a much more interesting structure: the instrumental is a bit french new wave and the vocals are cute; it could be a really bad ballad in the hands of other producers. The video, which managed to get over 700k views in less than 24 hours, is pretty much an Anime version of 'Sucker Punch', but not as bad as the movie was. Probably my favorite 2NE1 track ever.

2NE1 - I Hate You

And here are the girls modeling for Korean magazine, 1st Look in Jeremy Scott for Adidas Originals Collection. As usual, sporty looks (it's Adidas after all) with really bright colors, lots of animal prints and random teddy-bear accessories. Some cool over-the-top stuff in there, but I suspect that you might need to be a k-pop star to fully appreciate and wear the whole collection at once. Check the gallery below with all the looks from the mag and see you in the next k-pop update!

Jeremy Scott for Swatch

HIYA // J Scott

Jeremy Scott has revealed his collaboration with Swatch via his capslocked twitter.  Of course he also released images of them via twitpic, including the one above of him modelling (bottom to top) Winged Swatch, Lightning Flash and Swatch Opulence.

Even though the pic reminds me of - forgive me, most of you should just stop reading here unless you have the patience to indulge me for a sec - a ridonkulous scene out of Twilight 1, where Edward is in the science labs looking all smokey and broody, and just happens to be sitting in front of a taxidermied owl with it's wings outstretched. It conveniently makes Edward look like the fierce owner of some wee white wittle cherub wings.

Though I don't really buy into Jeremy Scott's undoubtedly highly coveted brand, the three Swatch designs he has created are totally pop and totally cool - my favourite is the Lightning Bolt! Check 'em:

Adidas Passion

I got a mysterious invitation in the afternoon from He Who Must Not Be Named to go to the Place That Cannot Be Named, saying that the evening was on him. Turns out that Adidas was throwing a party to celebrate the release of Jeremy Scott, Alyasha and Kazuki's line; and to exhibit five photographs of the collection as interpreted by Chiara Gadaleta, Ana Strumpf, Dudu Bertholini, David Pollack and Lara Gerin.

On arrival near midnight, the party was jumping, and the (open) bar pumping out all kinds of concoctions. Poison of choice: Passionfruit Mojitos. The booze flowed as easily as it ever does when people are lined up 3 deep at the bar waiting for their free drinks; but the dancefloor in front of the photographs was just as packed as party-goers spun around and lip-synched to hit after hit from Kylie, Beyonce, Britney and Madonna, as well as a few well chosen classic dance hits from the 90s. The collection itself was exhibited upstairs.

Recipe for Passion Fruit Mojitos after the jump!
