Beyoncé - 4
We swear this isn't an ironic listening. We love Beyoncé and 4. OK, we might unironically skip straight to track 5, 'Party', produced by Kanye West and with rap by Andre3000, because we ain't no stay-home-mums that need all those ballads about being broken hearted and finding the right person. But, after that, the album turns into a beautiful compilation of classic r'n'b, soul and a bit of sweat-inducing booty tracks - not too many though - that sound surprisingly courageous considering the actual state of pop music. And for that, we bow down and hail Queen B. P.S. Get the deluxe version, for those extra couple of amazing tracks.
The name of this label has been interpreted in many ways; from 'bass-seekey' to 'base-ike', but the correct way describes exactly what this label is about: BASIC. Bassike delivers easily breezily cut staples with an interesting little twist that keeps them from being your run of the mill. For those that live in climates like that of Australia (where Bassike hails from) or Brazil, you'll know how easy it is to make fashion faux pas when the weather gets hot and the prospect of wearing anything but a bathing suit becomes slightly unappealing; Bassike is all and everything you need.
Game of Thrones
Before watching HBO's Game of Thrones, I assumed the series would tend a bit more towards the blood-dripping Danish movie Valhalla Rising rather than fairy-tale stories a lá 'Lord of the Rings'; and for that I didn't really like the series at the beginning. But slowly, I found myself submitting to tales of bad kings, midget juggernauts, savage warriors and... dragons. And that happened probably because there aren't exactly good guys and bad guys here, like there are in Tolkien stories - and that is, of course, a simplification of his work. Another reason I relented to this series is because of the intriguing political backstage element that leads to the ever-happening dance of thrones. Oh, and did I mention the gratuitous nekkid-ness?
The Norfolk // Sydney, Australia
Of the slew of new spots having opened up in Sydney in the last six months, The Norfolk on Cleveland St in Surry Hills has been one fated with success. Owned by some of the same kids that have brought The Flinders back to life (and currently, it's incredibly quick onset of 'The Norms'), you'll undoubtedly find The Norfolk rammed with all kinds, vying for a bite, a beer and a spot in the garden out back. The aim of the game is to cultivate Aussie pub culture at it's best; and it's doing a pretty decent job so far - if only you could get a table!
Super Sad True Love Story
Super Sad True Love Story is the third book from the writer of the best selling Absurdistan, Gary Shteyngart. Incidentally, I read him name dropped in Flavorpill's Ultimate Hipster Reading list and in the same sentence as James Franco (they're buds, apaprently) just before I finished his latest offering. Don't let any of that put you off, or take away any of the sad scary brilliance of Super Sad True Love Story; written from the perspective of one 39 year old Lenny Abramov, son of Russian immigrants and in love with the impossibly cute and cruel Eunice Park. A satire that cuts to the bone, Super Sad True Love Story is exactly it's title. And it's good.

Kisses // My Dummy Valentine Mixtape

By now you know Kisses, right? The cute Californian duo - that also happened to be a couple - just added another full heart to their adorable music by making a Valetine’s Mix for Dummy magazine. Apparently, Jesse Kivel and Zinzi Edmundson searched for every song with “love” and “heart” on their iTunes and came up with a list that includes Kylie Minogue, Andre 3000, Kanye West, CEO and an exclusive Lake Hearbeat remix for Kisses. Although I just assumed this entire “searching” story, I’m pretty sure it happened exactly like that. In case you prefer a more official definition of the mix, here it is: “The mix is all about romance and love. If you are looking to turn up the heat on Valentine’s day, this is the mix for you.”

Bermuda Kisses

kisses bermuda

As you might know, I’m not an English-born speaker. I’m Brazilian and we speak Portuguese (not Spanish, ok?). So in order to learn the language I had to play lots of video games with the English/Portuguese dictionary close – yay for ‘Final Fantasy’ and the ‘Resident Evil’ saga - and take English classes...not so yay.

In class, besides a bunch of books and a teacher, I also had the pleasure of watching some horribly cheesy, poorly recorded teaching aid videos that looked like old porn, only with worse acting. And those videos look pretty much like the latest kitschy video installment from Kisses, for their lovely ‘Bermuda’.

Kisses - Bermuda

‘Bermuda’ was the first track that I ever heard from the Kisses – it was first released at the beginning of the year – and it’s as sunny as the tracks that followed. If you are looking for a way to warm up your day in four minutes and twenty one seconds, you may download the song below and play it whenever you want to.

Kitsch Kisses
Kisses @ O-Nest Japan

I might’ve been a bit too harsh talking about Kisses’ ‘People Can Do The Most Amazing Things’ video and I think it was my own fault, not Kisses. I didn’t get their kitsch humor at the time. But I think I kinda get it now, and this new understanding even makes them more cute.

For their newest single, ‘Kisses’, Jesse Kivel and Zinzi Edmundson dress as astronauts and go to a cheap-looking moon. There, they explore, get hungry and fire up some sausages. They go exploring again, find an exotic E.T., introduce him to the wonderful world of marshmallows and in return, he takes them on a psychedelic space trip that ends up in a swimming pool on Earth. How awesome is that? Well, not as awesome of the song, but still…

Kisses - Kisses

By the way, the band is offering the song for free. So if you want to grab one of the most chilled songs of the year, just do it below. Joe Goddard (Hot Chip) also did a remix for the song and it’s also a free download (see not only cute, but also very nice), so if you are for a minimal and extended version of the song, you know what to do.

People Can Do The Most Amazing Things, but this Kisses video is not the case

I’m always up for videos with bad use of green screen, but ‘People Can Do The Most Amazing Things’ from Kisses didn’t impress me at all. The video lacks charisma even whilst having one of the most adorable band members around. I would blame the poor cameras and the special effects – specially the photobooth “mirror” variety. Also, I don’t know if I understood it wrong, but I think it implies that old people exercising and taking care of their appearance is something “amazing”.

Kisses - People Can Do The Most Amazing Things

Anyway, the video might not be a favorite here, but the song inspired by Arthur Russell’s ‘The Platform On The Ocean’ is. Check our full opinion and the Saint Etienne remix by clicking here.

People (Still) Can Do the Most Amazing Things

Some wise guy once said (and then a million people repeated) that there's nothing new to be created. Although we are totally pro new, depending on our mood, we kinda agree with the old bastard who said that; but from a different perspective. I mean, there's no denying - as our Blogwars buddy Fernando from Dominódromo pointed - that Kisses' new single, ‘People Can Do the Most Amazing Things’, sounds quite similar to Arthur Russell’s ‘The Platform On The Ocean’.

But as much as we believe that Arthur Russell was a genius, it takes effort to make his music part of your life. So that's why we like Kisses’ ‘People Can Do the Most Amazing Things’ better than ‘The Platform On The Ocean’. They took a rough, squalid and arty idea and extracted something beautiful and pop yet not dissimilar to the original. And we give it extra points for adding a great chorus.

And we haven’t even mentioned the Saint Etienne remix for the song, which turns ‘People Can Do the Most Amazing Things’ into five minutes of electronica and sounds like a haunted version of early Hot Chip.

Bermuda gets Active
Nice arms Active Child, aka Pat Grossi

I didn't entirely 'get' Active Child when I first had a listen some months ago, despite lots of blogger love. But after this remix, I went back for another listen. This time around though, despite the airy, almost loosely flatulent bass of 'Wilderness' reminding me of the I M // Making Art scene in She's All That with all the midgets and Freddie Prinze Jr playing hacky sack, I now have a much greater appreciation for Active Child's echoey, expansive, choral driven folk-tronica. Here, check him out for yourself before listening to his remix of Kisses' track below that:

Hiya Kisses

Anyhooz, Active Child remixed Kisses' debut single 'Bermuda'. The track gets a run in with Active Child's sustained synths, it's instrumentation thickened up and intensified with deeper layers, and by removing the elements that I found (albeit endearingly) cheesy about the original, AC takes the track to the next level. Grab it below:

Lake Heartbeat get Kisses

The low-profile Swedes, Lake Heartbeat have had their balmily breezy track 'Southbound' remixed by the currently being floated-out-into-the-blogosphere LA duo, Kisses. The original track is really pretty, and it makes me feel oddly homesick for some bygone summer and a less complicated - yet still a little nostalgically heartrending - time.

Kisses are perfect as remixers; modifying the strummed guitars that encase the original track like a gauzy skin, bringing that genius string section barely heard in the original to the forefront of the mix, before filling the space with all manner of synth to give 'Southbound' a soft sparkle. Lovely.

P.S. It's International Record Store Day on the 17th of April, and Lake Heartbeat's label, Service (also home to Jens Lekman, The Tough Alliance and Whitest Boy Alive) have pressed 500 limited edition copies of 2009's glorious debut album from the Stockholm pop duo which was recorded with producer extraordinaire Dan Lissvik.
