So last year, Late of the Pier graced us with the awesome 'Blueberry', and now their first release of 2010 is the double A-side single including 'Blueberry' and 'Best In The Class', coming out on March 1st via Phantasy.

The vid below has been directed by Steve Glashier and Sam Potter, and is the director's cut for the forthcoming 'Best in The Class'. I find the video makes me snicker a little bit (in a good way). There's something awkwardly amusing about watching a bunch of preening girls dancing in choreographed circles around the camera til everyone gets naked and throws coloured powder around (which totally strikes me as quite LOTP-ish. And Primary 1-ish). The most fun part is how quite ingeniously Steve and Sam (and editor Mike Prior) have toyed with the speed and frames in fast forward/reverse/skip/repeat.

The guys seem to be expanding themselves with other creative pursuits and projects - from solo albums, collabos, films (including the video below for 'Best In The Class' co-directed by Sam Potter) and production (like Sam Eastgate and his production work on Egyptian Hip Hop). Not even to mention work on the follow up album to one of our perpetual favourites, Fantasy Black Channel which of course, we can't hardly wait for. In the meantime, watch out on March 1st for 'Best in the Class'.

Late of the Pier

When I first heard Late of the Pier, it took me such a long time to getting the hang of pronouncing the 'of' bit their name instead of 'off'. And finally, WOO they are getting set to release a new single. Their shimmering style, schizophrenic guitars and frenetic percussion are all still present, but they've gone a slower, more emotive and melodic kind of route this time. I CANNOT WAIT to hear more as these guys are an absolute mainstay on my musical rotations.

They debuted this track - entitled 'Blueberry' - live, really early in 2009, but it's only going to be released in February 2010 on the band's own label Phantasy as a double A side single with 'Best In The Class'. Check it out in a rip from Erol Alkan's BBC 6mix below:

Late of the Pier by Durkl

If you are into multi colored geometric shapes or childish drawings then this is what you're going to be wearing in the upcoming warm sunny days. American label Durkl have just released their lookbook for Spring/Summer and it features Brit (post?) new rave band Late of the Pier as models. The boys are just the right ones for the job as like the collection, their music is a mix of cheesy '80s influence seen through fresh modern eyes.

The clothes also have a second hand shop flavor; using odd combos from an 80s colour palette. Without the trouble of having to try and fit into a smaller size as you would in a second hand shop, there are a wide variety of pieces available from T-shirts to hats; from jumpers to jackets, so no need to rummage, there's gonna be something for everyone.
