LOCAL NATIVES - GORILLA MANOR
To say that Local Natives are this year's Fleet Foxes isn't wrong, but not that right either. Local Natives are softer, brighter and lighter than their widely critiqued sort-of-counterparts. Gorilla Manor is a delicious debut that should be listened and loved for its own merits and there are 12 of them here; from the beautiful single 'Airplanes' to the epic journey of 'Stranger Things'. For fans of harmonic vocals, delicate guitars and gorgeous layers (and I bet there'll be a lot of you).
FAJ
You know about FAJ right? That's Fanny and Jessy as they are also known, and this duo have one of the coolest young labels coming straight out of London. They debuted their first range last year entitled 'I Hope You Die Soon' and they're also responsible for the infamous tee of the same name (and it's sibling, 'Suck It You Fuck') which I actually often find gets quite a warm reaction despite it's sentiment. This month they're showing their hotly anticipated sophomore collection for AW 2010 which no doubt will be full of their trademark wicked humor and edge. Definitely ones to watch.
LOST

Honestly, who isn’t? The sixth and final season of Lost, one of the best series ever created, just started and we are sure spending more time talking, reading and thinking about it than watching it. Well, from what we read some mysteries won’t be answered (the real meaning of the numbers, anyone?), but if there's something we've learned from accompanying Locke’s island friends (and enemies) is that the travel is always more enjoyable than the actual place it’s taking you to. Well, not if the smoke monster is trying to kill you.

Slow Blow
The latest station on the Drunky Town train line is in Sydney, Australia at a little club in the Spanish Quarter (actually it's just two Spanish shops next to each other on the same street or something like that in the CBD) called GoodGod, which plays host to soirée of the moment, Slow Blow. Word has it that in January, Karen O crashed Sydney's current cool kids party, but to be honest by that time everyone was too busy dancing and cutting loose in D-Town to care. And that's the true mark of a good time - when you find yourself twirling about without a care in the world. Or it could just mean you're trashed. Heh.
David Mitchell
You know those films where there are all these supposedly 'intertwined' stories and lives? Quite a cliché concept for both books and movies I suppose, but rarely does it really resonate in either medium. David Mitchell though (not the Peep Show one) manages to spin tales into tightly woven rugs that are quite fantastical yet believable, moving without being overly sentimental, eclectic and incredibly entertaining. He also writes straight narratives too, with just as much panache and verve. I just (re)read Number9Dream though any and all of David Mitchell's books are highly recommended...and he's got a newie coming out this year. EXCITEMENT.

Aeroplane's Best of November

aeroplane

I've been working like a slave lately and it made me miss the last two monthly mixes from Aeroplane - but not this month. Because this month I'm finally learning how to be more organized and, of course, (here it goes, my most commonly used line in this blog) this month's is the best one so far. Seriously, I don't know if it's because I didn't know most of the good tracks on there and couldn't think of ways to combine them or something; but they all go really well with each other in a way only Aeroplane could edit.

Well, I suppose there isn't anybody better to pick, mix and release new songs every month than these two Belgians. Check the amazing tracklist after the break, play the mix and go to SoundCloud to download it!

Breakbot's Heroes Mix

breakbot

I don't mean to spoil it for any of you, but after the amazing mix that Aeroplane did yesterday I just felt like sharing another really good mix to get you through the night, dancing. Breakbot, one of the best acts Ed Banger has ever signed, did a mix for the In BBC's The New DJs We Trust show on the 14th of August that is being played over and over again in my house.

The 14 minute long mix features 20 songs and feels like a sexy party that mixes house, old school hip hop and synthpop, all converging on the grooviest bass lines you can find from the last 30 years. From classics that will make your mum's eyes well up, to new songs like our ridonkulously superb friends from French Horn Rebellion. The only problem here is that it could've totally been way longer and Alex Metric could've not interupted in the middle of mix. But well, it doesn't really take too much fu out of it. Check the amazing tracklist below and download it as fast as you can.

Classixx mix for KCRW

classixx

Classixx are slowly turning into a band you can blindly rely on. After many great remixes in 2008, this LA duo have just released a mixtape they did for the Raul Campos' show on KCRW. Although there isn't tracklist available, you just need to remember how much you loved all their latest remixes (from Phoenix to Holy Ghosts!) to go running to the download the mixtape below. Classic disco, new synthpop gems and driving bass songs to make sure your hips will be following the beats for the whole 44 minute duration of this set.

P.S. Pay attention to the second song in the mix, it's a new remix for the DFA duo YACHT's 'Psychic City (Voodoo City)' which is highly enjoyable. Hopefully that will see the light of day soon.

P.P.S. If you don't want to or can't download the mix, here is a widget of the show that includes the interview plus the mix.

The Bang Gang mix: 5 minutes, 82 songs!

Bang-Gang_for_Annie-Mac

How many songs can you play in little more than 5 minutes? Two? Three? If you are the immense Australian DJ combo The Bang Gang, then your answer would be precisely 82 motherfucking songs! How do I know that? Because Annie Mac asked the boys to do a mini-mix for her Friday show at BBC Radio One and Gus da Hoodrat and Jamie Doom came up with this:

Bag Raiders, Frankmusik, Tiga, Late of the Pier, Inflagranti, Hot Chip, Mr Oizo, Damn Arms, Ratatat, Zombie Nation, Santigold, Shazam, and many more (I really mean it). It's like coming out of a drug induced haze and remembering all the best bits of the party.

A love letter to Aeroplane

aeroplane-disco_balearica

The loved one

Dear Aeroplane (aka Vito De Luca and Stephen Fasano),

You already had my heart when you did that incredible remix for Friendly Fires featuring the lovely ladies of Au Revoir Simone - not to mention the Shortwave Set, Sebastien Tellier and Grace Jones remixes that I also adore. From there I went looking for your very own material and I finally understood what Balearic truly meant...yet now you go one step beyond.

In regards to the Disco Balearica mix that came out with the latest edition of the English magazine Mixmag, I'm speechless to say anything except that you, Aeroplane, have just become my favorite producers. Sorry for not going to see you when you played in Brazil, but I just wasn't that into you then. Please come back soon!

Truly yours.
