BEFORE TODAY by Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti
It doesn’t take much to make me feel stupid. Trying to find the words to describe the debut album of Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti at 4AD is just one of many examples I could give you. To me, ‘Before Today’ sounds like an album that Kevin Barnes could be recording if he loved goth bands more than funk ones. Or like the cold wave genre entering a multicoloured psychedelic stage instead of glazing at it's own depression. Don’t mind my threadbare examples; this is the album that will make it onto every interesting top 10 of the year and you don’t wanna miss it.
Nathan Smith
I can't resist (probably overpriced) basics-with-a-twist. My wardrobe, full of T by Wang, Oak, Bassike and yes, American Apparel is proof of this; and since in Australia, a new favourite has emerged in the form of Nathan Smith. His selection of supersoft tees, tanks and dresses have sucked me into buying multiples of a number of styles in different colourways. You just can't go wrong with these though! Addictively and endlessly wearable - and not in actual fact, overpriced in the slightlest - Nathan Smith is the way forward for your wardrobe.
Freaks and Geeks
I don’t think any series will treat teenagers the same way that Freaks and Geeks did almost 10 years ago. Although relying on every teen American cliché they could, this series was the closest thing to reality you could get whilst still being something fun and interesting to watch – cause, you know, life is boring. With bands like The Who, The Clash and XTC being either part of episodes or the soundtrack, this 80’s based cult show was short-lived (only 18 episodes), but long enough to enrich the careers of some young actors (i.e. James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Busy Philipps and, erm, Linda Cardellini) and is greatly missed. Can we have a movie about them meeting again in the 00’s?
Rong He
Once, a friend of mine wanted to take me to this 'cheap Chinese restaurant', situated in the heart of Liberdade, a Japanese neighborhood in São Paulo. When we got there the place was packed, but because it looked cheesy and kinda poor, I didn't want to wait it out. It took another friend for me to go back there and fall in love with it. Now, every time the mood for some freshly made noodles (you can watch the chief making the noodle dough through a window) framed in some horribly painted pink walls takes me, I go for Rong He. Did I mention the food is also incredibly generous and cheap?
The Selby Is In Your Place
The ultimate in peeping tom into other, cooler, more fashionable, richer, quirkier and more-hipster-than-thou lives is Todd Selby's The Selby. Having previously been an internet only voyeur's dream, Todd has just last month released The Selby Is In Your Place, a book  the coffee table tome full of twee drawings, colourful interiors and people showering. Half of the images in the books are favourites from the website and the other is stuff he hasn't published online yet. So go check it out, maybe buy it if you can to make your crappy coffee table in your crappy apartment that little bit cooler with pictures of someone else's cool stuff.

Rainbow Arabia - Kabukimono
Rainbow Arabia - Kabukimono

After hearing their Basta EP mid last year, Rainbow Arabia have been on rotation alongside Yeasayer, Gang Gang Dance, M.I.A. and Health when I've been in the mood for some some bangin' off the wall type choons.

Rainbow Arabia is husband and wife duo Danny and Tiffany Preston. Like the name implies, their music is a technicolour affair with the the Middle East - a psychelic gun run through the Sphinxes punctuated by veritable calls to rain dance by Danny and Tiffany the electro warriors.

Their next EP, Kabukimono drops in July - but meanwhile, they're on tour all over Europe, and their video for Omar K has debuted on Pitchfork (seriously, check it, Tiffany and her odd little child of Satan cut sick on a local grocery store. What is it with grocery stores and video clips today?)

After you've watched the vid, here's Ghosts On Tape's remix of Omar K for your ears:

Die Slow

The Health boys

I laughed to myself before I googled "health die slow"; thinking that it would return all kinds of medical mumbo back at me. To my surprise though, the first couple of pages at least, were what I was looking for: LA's experimental noise rock band Health (though the next few pages started describing Amy Winehouse's decline).

They're back with their first release since their incredible Disco remix album and their astonishing eponymous debut album, 'Die Slow', with it's brilliant groaning guitars and drums that pound inevitably forward.

Jacob Duzsik's layered vocals are like a transparent veil of chiffon over the morphing and shifting guitars, with icicles of noise and effects shimmering in and out to accompany the stalking drumbeat. 'Die Slow' has a raw finish; and despite it's matrix-esque qualities, it's also kinda primal. Artfully executed and flawlessly put together, 'Die Slow' is a slayer.

The Pictureplane remix is gorgeous, lush and almost a little bit tropical. If I ever had to describe in music what travelling through a wormhole in a dream at warp speed with a stomping house beat driving felt like to me, this track would do that very neatly.

Yuksek gets remixed
Yuksek
Yuksek live

French producer Yuksek has one of the best live sets I've seen lately. He plays two different synths, sings via a vocoder and has the energy and the beats to make even the most skeptical crowd go insane. That along with his incredible debut Away from the Sea is managing to blow some sparkling new life into the faded electro banger scene - yes, I'm talking to you, bloghouse producers.

So it's no surprise that the latest single release from his album not only manages to have a hot video and not one, but two great remixes. The video comprises of Yuksek and the American singer/rapper Amanda Blank (who features in the song) spinning within minimal black and white scenarios that get more complicated with some crazy editing, making you feel like you're watching the duo on acid with 3d glasses on.

Yuksek - Extraball (feat. Amanda Blank)

But back to remixes: the single is accompanied by Breakbot, CK, Pilooski and The Shoes. Of course, Breakbot takes the cake for this EP. When he drives down a softer road in his own music, he goes all for the dancefloor in some of his remixes - his Michael Jackson flavoured remix is even better than the original! Another must-listen is the cover of 'Extraball' by the Shoes. They crafted a dramatic and pompous duet from the music, and I love how she stressed the ends of the words.

FITTER HAPPIER

The crazy invitation that Michell Zappa did for his bday

I'm going to DJ tonight at Funhell - a weekly, cozily intimate party that happens at Funhouse (SP/Brazil). Tonight, Boss in Drama is going to play live to celebrate the birthday of one of the owners of the party: Fubah (Funhell 's producer) and Michell Zappa (the owner of the wicked Radiohead pics in our webby. He's agreed to be our official photographer at IM // A \\PARTY #2).

So in order to celebrate, I'm posting 5 tracks that I'm most definitely gonna drop tonight, so if you like them you better show up!
